Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Shatters

Total, suffocating silence dropped over the 48th-floor boardroom.

Across the speaker system built into the mahogany conference table, Harrison’s voice resonated with the clarity of a courtroom judge. Through the line, Harrison could hear the sudden rustle of papers, the scraping of executive chairs, and the sharp intake of breath from Eleanor Sterling.

“Harrison?” Victor’s voice faltered for the briefest fraction of a second, his polished corporate facade cracking before he quickly smoothed it over. “Harrison, are you calling from a secure line? Where are you? The board has been trying to reach you for two hours. We’re in the middle of an extraordinary executive session regarding severe accounting discrepancies.”

“I know exactly what you’re doing, Victor,” Harrison said, walking down the central hall toward the basement stairs. “You’re asking the board to sign an emergency resolution stripping me of my authority based on a fabricated forensic file you pulled off a stolen flash drive.”

Victor let out a sorrowful sigh, playing his part to perfection for the directors in the room. “Harrison, please. Don't do this to yourself. We have the bank authorizations bearing your cryptographic signature. Over sixty million dollars has been siphoned through foreign subsidiaries. We wanted to handle this discreetly, give you medical leave, let you get the help you clearly need—”

“Evelyn,” Harrison interrupted flatly. “Kill his presentation.”

“Done,” Evelyn replied.

In the boardroom, the massive eighty-inch display behind Victor went black. Victor spun around, scowling at the wall. “What happened to the AV feed? IT, get in here!”

Before anyone could move, the screen flickered back to life. But it wasn't displaying Victor’s slick slide deck anymore.

It displayed a high-resolution, full-color scan of a Chase Manhattan wire authorization dated August 14th. In the lower right corner, stamped in undeniable blue wet ink, was Victor Ashford’s personal signature, alongside an internal memo detailing a twelve-million-dollar routing to Apex Horizon Ltd—an offshore entity registered under the names of Victor’s brother-in-law and Travis Reed.

Marcus Vance, the board’s most senior director, leaned forward, adjusting his reading glasses. “What is this? Victor, your signature is on this transfer.”

“That’s... that’s a forgery!” Victor stammered, his face draining of color as he stared at the screen. “Harrison is hacking the presentation system! He’s projecting fabricated documents!”

“That line doesn't connect to the internet, Victor,” Harrison’s voice rang out through the ceiling speakers. “You’re looking at a live analog optical feed from the legacy vault built by my father. Those are physical paper records pulled directly from the company safe. And that’s just page one.”

The screen cycled to the next image: the invoice from Reed Security Solutions, showing an unauthorized $100,000 consulting fee authorized by Victor’s personal executive credit line.

Then came the third image: a video clip playing in crisp 1080p.

It was the footage from the surveillance micro-camera Catherine had pulled from behind the study baseboard. The video clearly showed Travis Reed inside Harrison’s private study at 10:15 that morning. He was seen placing two thick banded stacks of twenty thousand dollars in cash directly onto the center of Harrison’s blotter, positioning an auxiliary motion sensor aimed at the desk chair, and slipping the firm’s black encrypted flash drive into his pocket.

The boardroom erupted into chaos.

“My God,” Eleanor Sterling gasped, rising to her feet and glaring across the table at the CFO. “You planted evidence in his home?”

“This is a setup!” Victor shouted, his voice cracking as panic set in. “You can't verify the chain of custody on any of this! Harrison could have staged that video with an actor!”

“The woman who secured that evidence is standing in the room with the physical drive right now,” Harrison said, stepping off the cellar stairs onto the stone floor of the vault.

Catherine stood by the glowing optical terminal, her hands clasped neatly in front of her apron, completely unfazed by the corporate earthquake unfolding over the speaker.

“Her name is Catherine Ellis,” Harrison continued, his voice steady, proud, and absolute. “For three years, she has managed my household with complete integrity. This morning, your hired thug offered her one hundred thousand dollars to betray me. She refused. Then you had him plant cash to frame her as a thief and discredit anything she might say. But unlike you, Victor, Catherine doesn't sell her loyalty. And she doesn't leave loose ends.”

Victor stood frozen at the head of the conference table, his chest heaving, his eyes darting frantically toward the boardroom exit.

Two uniformed officers from the Chicago Police Department’s Financial Crimes Division, accompanied by building security, stepped through the double doors, their badges flashing under the recessed lights.

“Victor Ashford?” the lead detective asked, stepping forward with a pair of handcuffs. “Step away from the table, please. We have a federal warrant for your arrest.”
