Chapter 7 - The Master's Gambit

The private conference room on the forty-second floor of the Dirksen Federal Building in downtown Chicago was lined with sound-dampening acoustic panels and guarded by six heavily armed federal marshals.

At the head of the long mahogany table sat Special Agent in Charge Evelyn Reed, flanked by two senior prosecutors from the Organized Crime Division. Across from them sat Adrian Cross, immaculate in a charcoal-grey tailored three-piece suit, his hands resting calmly on the table. Beside him sat Jonathan Vance, the high-priced defense attorney who had flown in on a red-eye from Miami.

Claire was absent, tucked safely away in a secured location under the watchful protection of Caleb and Marcus. Adrian had made sure of that before stepping foot in Chicago.

""Mr. Cross,"" Agent Reed began, her voice crisp, professional, and dripping with thinly veiled triumph. ""You walked into this building voluntarily, which spared us the spectacle of kicking down whatever rock you were hiding under. But make no mistake: your empire is completely dismantled. We have over four thousand financial records detailing your operations. You are facing twenty-five counts under the RICO statute, money laundering, racketeering, and conspiracy. You will spend the remainder of your natural life in ADX Florence.""

Adrian didn't flinch. He didn't even blink. He reached inside his breast pocket with slow, deliberate movements. Two marshals instantly reached for their sidearms, but Vance held up a hand.

""Easy, gentlemen,"" Vance said smoothly. ""My client is merely producing evidence.""

Adrian placed the silver flash drive onto the mahogany table and slid it two inches forward. ""Inside this drive, Agent Reed, is the unredacted personal archive of Victor Hale. It covers twelve years of operations that occurred after his supposed death.""

Reed scoffed, leaning back in her chair. ""Hale died twelve years ago in a gangland feud that you orchestrated.""

""Hale died forty-eight hours ago in Briar Ridge, Pennsylvania,"" Adrian countered calmly. ""And if you check with your coroner in Scranton, you’ll find his dental records currently matching the corpse pulled out of an illegal bunker collapse. But that isn't what makes this drive valuable.""

He leaned forward, placing his elbows on the table, his dark eyes locking onto Reed with the absolute dominance of a man who still held all the cards.

""Hale didn't operate in a vacuum. For the last decade, his black-market shipments were cleared through the Port of Montreal and the Port of Newark using federal customs seals provided by the Assistant Director of your own bureau—Richard Sterling.""

The room went dead silent. The two prosecutors looked at each other, their faces draining of color.

""Sterling is a decorated thirty-year veteran,"" Reed said, her voice dropping an octave, though a crack of uncertainty betrayed her composure.

""Sterling took forty-eight million dollars in bearer bonds from Hale over eight years,"" Adrian continued relentlessly. ""The transaction hashes, the Swiss account numbers, the surveillance audio of Sterling negotiating the release of intercepted shipping containers—it’s all on that drive. Alongside the coordinates of three active mass graves in northern Indiana where Hale buried the witnesses Sterling ordered liquidated.""

Adrian tapped the drive once with his index finger.

""You want to put me in a cage, Reed? Go ahead. Put the mafia broker away, take your press conference, and let the real rot continue eating your department from the top down. Or... you take the deal I’m about to give you.""

Reed swallowed hard, her eyes darting between the silver drive and the calm, unreadable face of the man who had outmaneuvered every predator in the country. ""What's the deal, Cross?""

""Immunity. Absolute, irrevocable, signed by the Attorney General,"" Adrian said evenly. ""For Claire Moreau-Cross. She had no knowledge of any criminal enterprise prior to three days ago. She is completely cleared of any accessory or conspiracy charges. The same goes for Caleb Ward—a full pardon for past actions in exchange for state testimony against Hale’s surviving network.""

""And what about you?"" Reed demanded. ""You think you walk away clean after two decades of running Chicago?""

""I don't expect to walk away clean,"" Adrian replied coldly. ""I forfeit every asset registered under Cross Enterprises. Ninety million in real estate, one hundred and forty million in liquid corporate accounts, and every commercial property in three states. It all goes into the federal forfeiture fund.""

He stood up, buttoning his jacket with effortless elegance.

""I will plead guilty to one count of misprision of a felony for failing to report Hale's survival twelve years ago. You get your public scalp. You get the biggest federal corruption bust in modern American history. And you sentence me to two years of minimum-security confinement at a private facility of my choosing.""

May you like

Reed stared at him in disbelief. ""Two years? You think you can buy your freedom from a life sentence with a corporate forfeit and an assistant director?""

Adrian leaned over the table, his voice a low, terrifying whisper that reached only her ears. ""If that drive isn't plugged into an offline terminal within sixty minutes, an automated dead-man's switch releases Sterling's files to every major newspaper, television network, and international watchdog on earth. You won't just lose the case, Reed. The entire Department of Justice will burn to the ground. You have forty-five minutes to decide whether you want to be a hero, or a casualty.""
