Chapter 5 - The Collapse of Briar Ridge

""Get him up!"" Adrian roared at Marcus, pointing down at Caleb. ""Carry him to the primary transport! Move!""
Marcus and another operative hoisted the massive, groaning enforcer between their shoulders, rushing him backward through the shattered blast door toward the snowy surface. The ceiling above them began to groan, long jagged cracks spider-webbing across the aged concrete as demolition charges detonated in the deep tunnels below. Dust and chunks of masonry rained down like a deadly hail.
Claire tried to stand, but her ankle, twisted during the explosion, buckled beneath her. She fell back onto the debris, gasping in pain.
Adrian was there instantly. He didn't ask questions. He didn't demand explanations. He swept her up into his arms, pulling her tight against his chest with a desperate, crushing strength that knocked the wind out of her.
""I have you,"" he growled in her ear, his voice rough with an emotion he had never shown in his life. ""Hold onto me, Claire. Don't you dare let go.""
Claire buried her face into the crook of his neck, inhaling the familiar, grounding scent of sandalwood, leather, and smoke. ""The drive... Adrian, I dropped the drive!""
""Damn the drive!"" Adrian snarled, leaping over a fallen concrete beam as a massive steel girder crashed down behind them. ""Let the whole world burn! I came for you!""
Ahead of them, near the secondary industrial elevator, Victor Hale’s wheelchair was wedged against a buckled metal threshold. The dying madman was screaming curses into the flashing red light, a small detonator gripped in his withered hand.
""Cross!"" Hale shrieked, his milky eye bulging with insanity. ""You stole my life! You stole my daughter! Die with me!""
Hale raised a snub-nosed revolver, aiming it directly at Claire’s head.
Adrian didn't hesitate. With Claire clutched securely in his left arm, he brought his right pistol up in a single, fluid motion. He didn't fire to wound. He fired three consecutive rounds straight through Victor Hale’s chest.
The impact threw the crippled tyrant backward out of his chair. Hale hit the buckled floor, the revolver slipping from his lifeless fingers as the light faded permanently from his remaining eye. A massive section of the concrete ceiling detached above him, smashing down with the weight of a hundred tons, burying Victor Hale and the dark history of the syndicate under a mountain of pulverizing stone.
""Run!"" Adrian yelled, turning and charging toward the exit stairs.
The mountain seemed to roar around them. The ground heaved violently as secondary propane tanks in the lower levels exploded. Adrian sprinted up the crumbling concrete stairs, shielding Claire’s body with his own as flaming debris and shards of glass tore through his heavy wool coat.
They burst through the heavy iron doors out into the freezing Pennsylvania air just as a catastrophic blast hollowed out the foundations beneath the lodge. The ground caved inward behind them, swallowing the charred ruins of Briar Ridge in a massive plume of fire, black smoke, and boiling snow.
Adrian threw himself forward down the snowbank, rolling with Claire until they came to a halt fifty yards away from the crater. He hovered over her, shielding her trembling body with his broad shoulders, his breath tearing from his lungs in ragged, freezing gasps.
For nearly a minute, neither of them moved. The only sound was the crackle of burning pine trees and the distant thrum of the tactical SUV engines idling down the hill.
Adrian pulled back slowly. His face was covered in soot, a jagged gash bleeding along his cheekbone, but his dark eyes were burning into hers with an intensity that terrified her.
""Why didn't you ask me?"" Adrian whispered, his voice cracking with a vulnerability that tore straight through Claire's soul. ""Three years, Claire. You laid in my bed every night. You listened to my heartbeat. Did you really believe I was capable of butchering your mother?""
Claire reached up with a trembling, blackened hand, her fingers gently touching the cut on his cheek. Tears spilled hot and fast down her snow-stung skin. ""I was terrified, Adrian. I found the files... and then I realized I had fallen completely, madly in love with the man who was supposed to be my enemy. I couldn't bear the thought that the only person who ever protected me was the monster from my nightmares.""
Adrian caught her hand, pressing her palm firmly against his lips, his eyes closing as a shudder ran through his powerful frame. ""I killed a hundred men, Claire. I took this city by force. I am a monster to the rest of the world. But to you? I would have cut out my own heart before I let a shadow fall over your face.""
Down the hill, Marcus jogged through the deep snow, his weapon lowered. ""Boss! The perimeter is clear. The medic has stabilized Caleb—the rounds missed his heart, he’s going to make it. But we have a massive problem.""
May you like
Adrian stood up slowly, lifting Claire back into his arms as if she weighed nothing at all. ""What problem?""
Marcus held up his phone, where news alerts were already flashing in red emergency banners across the Chicago networks. ""The feds just raided the penthouse. The flash drive Claire took had an automated cloud-sync protocol that tripped when Victor’s servers breached it. Half the city’s political ledger has leaked to the Department of Justice. The FBI has issued a federal arrest warrant for Adrian Cross.""
