Chapter 5 - The Velvet Trap

Over the next three days, my life was stripped away and rebuilt by an army of high-end stylists, security details, and protocol handlers.

A team of seamstresses from Bergdorf Goodman worked around the clock in the penthouse salon, tailoring an exquisite custom gown made of heavy Italian silk, adorned with hundreds of hand-sewn freshwater pearls.

Every time I looked in the three-way mirror, the tired, dishwater-stained waitress from the Bronx was disappearing, replaced by an untouchable, majestic figure who looked as though she had been born into a dynasty of kings.

My mother was moved from our modest Bronx apartment into a private, high-security recovery villa in upstate New York, accompanied by the finest oncologists in the country, all funded through an anonymous corporate account managed by Alessandro’s firm.

When I visited her on Thursday evening, she held my hands with tears streaming down her hollow cheeks.

“Camila... his family is dangerous,” she wept, stroking my hair. “Your father spent his whole life trying to keep you away from their shadows.”

“The shadows found me anyway, Mama,” I told her gently, kissing her forehead. “And I’m not going to run away from them anymore. Dad deserves the truth, and so do we.”

On Friday night, twelve hours before the wedding, Alessandro entered my suite without knocking.

He was dressed in a casual black cashmere sweater, holding two crystal glasses of vintage port wine. He set one glass on the nightstand beside my bed and leaned against the balcony doorframe, looking out over the twinkling lights of Central Park.

“You don't have to go through with this tomorrow, Camila,” he said quietly, his voice unusually soft in the quiet room.

I turned from the mirror, looking at him in surprise. “You’re offering to let me walk away?”

“I am,” he nodded, taking a sip from his glass. “The press is primed, but I can have you and your mother on a private jet to Zurich before sunrise. You would have twenty million dollars in a Swiss account and a new identity. You could study at any conservatory in Europe.”

I walked toward him, the hem of my silk robe sweeping the hardwood floor.

“Why give me an exit now, Alessandro? You spent three days building this fortress around us.”

He lowered his glass, his piercing gray eyes softening with an emotion that was raw, dangerous, and completely stripped of his mafia armor.

“Because once you walk down that cathedral aisle, there is no turning back,” he whispered, his hand reaching out to touch a loose curl beside my cheek. “Carmine will test you. The other five families will test you. You will be walking straight into a den of wolves.”

I looked up into his chiseled face, remembering the years of poverty, the broken dreams, and the image of my father’s handwritten sheet music covered in blood.

I gently placed my palm over the back of his hand, pressing his fingers against my skin.

“My father didn't raise a victim, Alessandro,” I said, my voice ringing with absolute certainty. “And he didn't teach me how to sing like an angel just so I could run away like a coward.”

A slow, breathtaking smile broke across Alessandro’s face—not the mocking smirk of the billionaire at Vetro Nero, but the proud, fierce smile of a man who had finally found an equal.

“Then tomorrow,” he whispered, his thumb grazing my lower lip, “we give New York a performance they will never forget.”
