Chapter 5 - The Trap is Sprung

While the penthouse remained an impenetrable fortress of recovery and warmth, the streets of Boston were rapidly turning into a battlefield. By ten in the morning, Vincent Cole entered Lorenzo’s study, his coat damp with mist, followed by two senior captains from the family’s old guard—men who had sworn loyalty to Lorenzo’s father thirty years ago.

""Boss,"" Vincent said, setting a encrypted burner phone on the mahogany desk. ""Dominic has panicked completely. When his hit squad reported that the Tremont apartment was wiped clean with zero forensic trace, he realized whoever took Elena Carter wasn't an ordinary cop. He just chartered a private Gulfstream jet out of Hanscom Airfield in Bedford, scheduled for departure at midnight to Zurich.""

""Has he accessed the offshore accounts?"" Lorenzo asked, lighting a thin cigar, the blue smoke swirling lazily into the morning air.

""He tried to,"" Marco Bellini interjected from the computer terminal, a savage grin on his face. ""Thanks to the routing keys Elena provided, we beat him to the punch. We initiated an emergency corporate audit through the international banking tribunal, flagging all forty-two million dollars as embezzled cartel funds. The accounts are frozen. The Swiss authorities have placed a digital hold on his assets. He has nothing left except the cash in his private safe at the harbor shipping docks.""

Lorenzo exhaled a plume of smoke, his eyes darkening to obsidian. ""The harbor docks. Warehouse 14. That was where Matteo conducted his final inspection before his car was sabotaged.""

""Poetic justice,"" Vincent agreed coldly. ""Dominic’s convoy is moving toward the docks right now. He’s taking Paulie Varga and a dozen heavily armed mercenaries. He plans to grab eight million dollars in emergency bearer bonds stored in the warehouse vault, take a high-speed speedboat out to international waters, and vanish into South America.""

Lorenzo stood up, buttoning his charcoal suit jacket. ""The old guard comes with us. Every man who loved Matteo. Every man who remembers what honor means.""

Before heading to the private elevator, Lorenzo walked down to the nursery. Elena was sitting in a comfortable armchair, wrapped in a cashmere robe, watching Sophie draw pictures of horses on a large sketchpad. When Elena saw the cold determination in Lorenzo’s eyes and the shoulder holster beneath his tailored coat, her face grew solemn.

""Lorenzo,"" she said, rising to her feet despite her lingering weakness. ""Please... be careful. Dominic has no soul left. He will burn everything to save his own skin.""

Lorenzo walked over and looked down at Sophie, who was proudly displaying a drawing of a silver horse with a chipped hoof, standing victoriously on top of a mountain.

""Uncle Lorenzo,"" Sophie asked innocently, holding up her drawing. ""Are you going to fix the horse's foot?""

Lorenzo gently took the paper and looked at it. ""No, little one. Like your father used to say: a soldier keeps his scars. They remind us of what we survived."" He looked at Elena, his expression steady as granite. ""Rest now. By the time the sun sets, the ghost haunting your family will be buried forever.""

Across town, at the bleak, industrial edge of Boston Harbor, cold salt spray battered against the rusted corrugated metal of Warehouse 14. Inside, the massive, cavernous space was dimly lit by swinging overhead halogen lamps. Dominic Moretti, sixty years old with slicked-back silver hair and an expensive camel-hair coat splattered with sea foam, was screaming at his men as they loaded heavy metal cases of bearer bonds into the back of an armored transport van.

""Move faster, you idiots!"" Dominic barked, checking his gold Rolex nervously. ""The jet is waiting at Hanscom! If we miss the tide window for the speedboat, we’re trapped in the harbor!""

""Boss, relax,"" Paulie Varga sneered, racking the slide of an automatic rifle. ""Whoever snatched the Carter broad doesn't know about this location. We’re ghosts here.""

Suddenly, the heavy metal roll-up doors of the warehouse slammed shut with a deafening boom that echoed like artillery fire through the steel rafters.

The high-pitched hum of industrial power cuts followed, plunging the entire warehouse into pitch-black darkness.

""What the hell?!"" Dominic shouted, reaching inside his coat for his pistol. ""Paulie! Get the backup generators online!""

Before anyone could move, four blinding tactical spotlights mounted on the upper catwalks snapped on, bathing Dominic and his dozen mercenaries in searing white light. Standing in the center of the main loading bay, fifty yards away, was a single figure.

Lorenzo Moretti.

He wore no body armor, held no weapon in his hands, and stood with an aura of absolute, terrifying dominion. Flanking the perimeter on every catwalk and steel balcony were thirty heavily armed men from the Moretti old guard, their rifles trained squarely on Dominic’s chest.

""Hello, Uncle,"" Lorenzo’s voice echoed across the concrete floor, smooth, chilling, and lethal. ""Running away so soon? You didn't even stay for Sunday dinner.""
