Chapter 4 - The Bloodline Revealed

The room seemed to lose all air. Lorenzo stared at Elena, the words crashing over him like a tidal wave tearing through a breakwater.

""Say that again,"" Lorenzo demanded, his voice dangerously low, vibrating with an intensity that made the medical monitors beside the bed beep erratically.

""Sophie is Matteo’s daughter,"" Elena repeated, tears spilling freely down her face now. ""Eight years ago, I wasn't just a housekeeper. My younger sister, Clara, was a senior literature student at Boston College. Matteo met her at a bookstore in Cambridge. They fell in love, deeply and completely, away from the prying eyes of your family and the media. Matteo knew how dangerous his life was becoming. He knew the tension rising within your father's syndicate, and he wanted to keep Clara entirely separated from that world.""

Lorenzo listened, every memory of his brother’s final year rearranging itself in his mind. He remembered Matteo disappearing for hours on weekends, smiling at his phone, refusing to bring bodyguards into Cambridge, claiming he just needed to feel like a normal college kid.

""Clara discovered she was pregnant in August of 2016,"" Elena continued, clutching her chest as if reliving the agony. ""Matteo was ecstatic. He bought a small cottage in New Hampshire under an alias. He told Clara that after he finished his final investigation into the harbor logistics, he was going to walk away from the syndicate business entirely. He gave her that silver knight as a promise. He told her: 'A soldier keeps his scars, but a father protects his home. When I return, this knight will be our child's first heirloom.'""

Elena swallowed a sob. ""Matteo died two months later. Clara was devastated. Her grief was so overwhelming that she suffered severe complications during childbirth. She gave birth to Sophie in a small clinic in Vermont, handed her to me, and died from postpartum hemorrhaging four hours later. Her last words to me were: 'Never let Dominic Moretti know she exists. He will kill her to secure the succession.'""

Lorenzo stood up slowly, the world spinning in crystalline clarity. All these years, his father had left half of the empire’s foundational trusts to Matteo and his direct heirs, with a clause that if Matteo died without issue, that vast wealth and voting power would revert directly to Dominic. Dominic hadn't just murdered Matteo for drug money; he had cleared the board of any legitimate claimant to the Moretti throne.

""Why didn't you come to me?"" Lorenzo asked, a rare crack of raw pain surfacing in his deep voice. ""I was his brother. I would have moved heaven and earth to protect you both!""

""Look at yourself, Lorenzo,"" Elena said softly, gesturing toward his tailored suit, his imposing stature, the guards standing armed at every perimeter of the estate. ""To the outside world, you are the Iron Don of Boston. People whisper that you are cold, merciless, unyielding. I didn't know you. All I knew was that everyone connected to that empire was dying or ruthless. I thought if I brought an illegitimate infant to your doorstep, your lieutenants would see her as a liability, or worse, Dominic would intercept us before I ever reached your gates.""

She looked toward the closed double doors where the sound of cartoons and little Sophie’s bright, innocent laughter drifted through.

""I raised her as my own daughter,"" Elena whispered. ""I worked three jobs. I scrubbed floors, balanced ledgers, cleaned grease off restaurant ovens just to buy her milk and books. But when the economy crashed and I lost my auditing job, I was forced into temporary agency work. That's how I ended up cleaning your mother's estate. It was fate, Lorenzo. Or maybe... maybe Matteo was guiding my hands to that hidden drawer.""

Lorenzo turned and pushed open the doors to the adjoining room.

Sophie was sitting cross-legged on a deep velvet rug, a pile of warm blueberry pancakes on a silver tray in front of her. She held a glass of orange juice with both hands, swinging her small feet back and forth. When she saw Lorenzo, she beamed, pointing to a small, scar-like birthmark on the inside of her left wrist—a distinct, crescent-shaped pigmentation.

Lorenzo’s breath caught in his throat.

Matteo had possessed the exact same crescent mark on his left wrist. Their father had called it the ""Moretti Crescent,"" a hereditary genetic trait passed down through four generations of men and women of their bloodline.

Lorenzo walked over and crouched down in front of the little girl. The terrifying, unapproachable crime boss of South Boston felt a tear trace a path down his cheek for the first time in ten years.

""Sophie,"" he murmured, his voice thick with profound reverence.

""Yes, Mr. Lorenzo?"" she chirped, tilting her head.

""You don't ever have to sell your toys for medicine again,"" he said, gently reaching out to touch her small shoulder. ""You don't ever have to run, or hide, or be afraid of the dark. Do you know who I am?""

May you like

Sophie looked at him, her hazel eyes—so uncannily identical to Matteo’s—reflecting the morning sun beginning to pierce through the high glass windows. ""You're the man who bought my horse.""

""I am your uncle,"" Lorenzo said, his voice ringing with absolute, immovable conviction. ""And you are a Moretti. The daughter of a king. And this city belongs to you.""
