Chapter 10 - The Dawn of Vance Capital

One year later.

The rooftop terrace of the newly renovated Vance Capital headquarters overlooked Central Park, bathed in the golden, crisp light of late October. Two hundred industry leaders, sovereign fund governors, and international philanthropists gathered to celebrate the firm’s first annual performance review under the Vance banner. Fund II had generated a staggering twenty-eight percent net return, outperforming every major private equity benchmark in North America.

I stood near the glass railing, wearing an ivory silk sheath dress, holding a glass of sparkling water. The city stretched out below me, immense, electric, and beautiful.

""You look like your mother tonight, Emily,"" my father said, walking over to join me. He handed me a folder containing the quarterly audit reports. ""Clean balance sheets. Zero debt liabilities. And the board just voted unanimously to expand the Vance Arts Restoration Fellowship by twenty million dollars.""

""Thank you, Dad,"" I smiled, leaning my head against his shoulder. ""For everything.""

""You did this yourself, Emily. All I did was hold the ledger. You were the one who knew when to close the book.""

Across the terrace, Arthur Sterling walked over with a satisfied twinkle in his eyes. ""Good evening, Managing Partner. Just a brief update for your personal records.""

""How is Marcus?"" I asked, completely detached from any malice.

""He took a junior research analyst position at a secondary lending firm in New Jersey,"" Arthur noted, checking his pocket watch. ""No management carry, fifty-five thousand a year, working eighty hours a week out of a cubicle in Paramus. His name is permanently flagged on the FINRA broker registry.""

""And the baby?""

""A healthy boy. Born six weeks ago. The educational trust is already funded and performing well. Miss Rossi accepted the Orlando settlement and has completely vanished from social media.""

I nodded gently. There was no joy in Marcus’s downfall, nor was there any bitterness left toward Isabella. They had chased an illusion of power built on vanity and lies, and the world had simply answered them with the unforgiving math of reality.

I turned back toward the ballroom. Inside, the lights were warm, the music was soft, and the conversation was real. I was no longer the quiet wife standing in the shadows of a man’s hollow ambition. I was Emily Vance—steward of an empire, master of my own life, standing tall in the light I had built with my own hands.

As the orchestra began to play a gentle waltz, I raised my glass to the New York skyline, smiling at the future that belonged entirely to me."
