Chapter 8 - The Fall of the Russo Dynasty

Before Vanessa could process the red dots dancing across her wet skin, a single high-velocity sniper round cracked through the storm from the river cliffs.

The shot struck the electronic detonator in her right hand, obliterating the device into plastic fragments and severing two of her fingers in a blinding spray of sparks and blood.

Vanessa screamed in agonizing shock, collapsing to her knees on the wet limestone terrace as her severed hand clutched her chest.

Her two bodyguards raised their weapons to return fire, but Marcus Reed and four tactical operatives lunged from the darkness of the rose garden, tackling both men to the ground and disarming them in three brutal seconds.

Dominic walked down the stone steps through the pouring rain, stopping directly over the weeping, bleeding woman who had orchestrated seven years of torment.

He looked down at Vanessa with an expression of cold, clinical disgust that cut deeper than any physical wound.

“You stole seven years of my children's lives, Vanessa,” Dominic said, his voice carrying clearly over the howling wind. “You made my wife raise three babies alone in the dark while you drank vintage champagne on my dime.”

“Dominic... please...” Vanessa sobbed, clutching her bleeding hand against her designer coat, her makeup smeared across her pale face like greasepaint. “I loved you! Everything I did, I did because I loved you!”

“You didn't love me, Vanessa,” Dominic replied, reaching into his pocket and tossing a thick, waterproof envelope onto the wet stone beside her.

“You loved the corporate shares. And you loved the power.”

Vanessa looked down at the envelope with wide, horrified eyes.

“What is this?” she gasped through her tears.

“That is a complete forensic audit of your private offshore accounts in Zurich and the Bahamas, compiled by the Federal Bureau of Investigation forty-five minutes ago,” Dominic explained, his voice chillingly methodical.

“We recovered the original encrypted emails between you and the rogue financial broker who forged Rebecca’s digital signatures seven years ago. We have the bank transfer receipts proving you paid two million dollars to frame my wife for corporate espionage.”

Vanessa’s breath hitched in her throat, the last remaining shred of her arrogance evaporating into pure, paralyzing terror.

“The United States Attorney for the Southern District has already unsealed a twelve-count federal indictment against you and your father,” Dominic continued. “Attempted murder of a federal non-profit director, conspiracy to commit interstate kidnapping, wire fraud, and grand larceny.”

Four armed federal marshals stepped out from the estate's main courtyard, their badges gleaming under the emergency tactical lights as they approached the terrace.

“Vanessa Russo, you are under federal arrest,” the lead marshal declared, stepping forward with heavy steel handcuffs.

Vanessa looked up at Dominic one last time, begging with her eyes for mercy, for a lawyer, for some shred of the protection he had offered her as a business partner.

Dominic didn't blink. He turned his back on her completely, leaving her weeping in the mud as the cold steel snapped around her wrists.

The rain began to subside, giving way to the first faint, golden glow of dawn breaking over the distant hills of the Hudson Valley.

Dominic turned toward the terrace doors, his heart hammering against his ribs as he hurried back inside the house.

Standing in the doorway of the library, holding hands with all three children, was Rebecca.

Her midnight-blue dress was rumpled, her hair was damp from the humidity, but she stood tall, whole, and completely safe.

Dominic stopped five paces away, his hands dropping to his sides, looking at his family with eyes that were entirely defenseless.

“They’re gone, Rebecca,” Dominic whispered, his voice trembling with raw, exhausted relief. “It’s over. You are all safe.”

Little Grace took a step forward, adjusting her sister’s glasses before looking up at Dominic with that bright, fearless smile she had inherited from her mother.

“Did you scare the bad people away, Mr. Shipping Man?” she asked sweetly.

May you like

A ragged, joyful laugh broke from Dominic’s chest as he dropped to his knees, opening his arms wide.

“Yes, sweetheart,” Dominic choked out through his tears. “The bad people are never coming back.”
