Chapter 6 - The Signature in the Gold

""That is an outright lie!"" I stepped through the parting crowd, my voice ringing clear across the marble floors. I pulled Vincent's coat from my shoulders and tossed it aside, standing tall in my wine-stained couture gown. ""I drafted the initial sketches for The Phoenix Awakening six months ago in Julian’s workshop. Every stone was sourced personally through Vance International’s ethical mines.""
Sophia smiled, a venomous, triumphant gleam in her eyes. ""Oh, really, darling? Then how is it that my father’s company filed an intellectual property copyright for the petal-locking mechanism three years ago? Henri, show the council the schematics.""
Henri Blanc adjusted his spectacles, his expression grave as he looked at me. ""Madame Moretti... or Vance, whichever you go by... Miss Reynolds has presented a verified timestamped patent for the internal hinge mechanism. Unless you can prove original creation that predates this registration, the committee has no choice but to disqualify your entry and ban your atelier from international exhibition for five years.""
The room seemed to spin. Julian had stepped forward, his fists clenched, arguing furiously with the board members, but corporate patents were ruthless. If Sophia’s father had stolen my private sketchbooks from the penthouse before I fled, they held legal ownership of my mechanics.
""Wait.""
A voice like thunder rolled through the room.
Vincent walked into the center of the circle. The sheer weight of his presence made the crowd part like the Red Sea. He didn't look at Sophia. He didn't look at the judges. He walked directly to the locked glass case where my necklace lay.
""Henri,"" Vincent commanded, his voice cold enough to freeze water. ""Unlock the case.""
""Mr. Moretti, this is an official committee review—""
""I paid for the security of this entire venue, Monsieur Blanc,"" Vincent interrupted smoothly, his eyes flashing with lethal danger. ""Unlock the glass, or I will have my security detail remove the case from the building.""
Trembling, the French judge reached for the master key and disarmed the laser grid, lifting the heavy tempered glass dome.
Vincent pulled a high-powered jeweler’s loupe from his breast pocket—a tool he had carried ever since he courted me in my father’s modest gem shop years ago. He lifted the heavy rose gold collar carefully, flipping it over to inspect the microscopic under-side of the central ruby clasp.
""Sophia claims her father patented this design three years ago,"" Vincent stated calmly, holding the piece up toward the gallery spotlights. ""What she failed to realize is that Claire never designs a mechanical joint without her signature artisan mark. On the inner curve of the third hinge, visible only under thirty-times magnification, there is an inscription.""
Sophia’s triumphant smile began to fracture. ""Vincent, what are you doing? She's a fraud—""
""Quiet,"" Vincent barked. He looked down through the loupe, then turned to Henri Blanc. ""Read it, Monsieur Blanc. Read the micro-engraving stamped directly into the melted alloy.""
The judge leaned in, pressing the magnifying glass to his eye. His breath caught in his throat.

""It says..."" Henri whispered, his voice trembling over the microphone system. ""‘For Noah, my little warrior. Born October 14th.’ With the personal maker's mark of Claire Vance-Moretti.""
Henri straightened up, his face hardening as he looked at Sophia. ""This metal was cast with the inscription embedded inside the alloy chamber. It cannot be replicated or retroactively etched. It was created by the mother of that child, and it predates any patent filing Miss Reynolds claims to possess.""
