Chapter 2 - The Ring on His Finger

Vincent froze five feet away. The sight of our three-year-old son clinging to my silk dress stopped him cold, as if someone had physically struck him in the chest. His dark eyes flicked down to Noah’s face—the high cheekbones, the stubborn chin, the unruly dark curls that were an exact mirror image of Vincent’s own childhood portraits.
""Claire,"" Vincent’s voice was lower than I had ever heard it, stripped of his usual ruthless corporate authority. It sounded raw, raspy, as if he hadn't used his vocal cords in days. ""Whose child is that calling 'Daddy'?""
""Excuse me, mister,"" Noah piped up, turning around and frowning at the tall stranger blocking our way. He reached out a tiny hand and tugged firmly on the hem of Vincent’s designer jacket. ""Can you please move? My daddy is coming, and he said I can't talk to scary people.""
Sophia let out a shrill, theatrical gasp from behind me. ""Vincent! Did you hear that? She took your son, hid him from your family, and now she’s playing house with some random gigolo while teaching your heir to call someone else his father! How dare she—""
""Shut your mouth, Sophia,"" Vincent snarled without turning his head. His gaze never left my eyes. The sheer venom in his tone made Sophia flinch backward into the crowd, her lips trembling in shock.
Then Vincent stepped closer, ignoring the ruined dress, ignoring the whispers of the elite watching our every move. He reached for my left hand, his grip warm and familiar, but I pulled my fingers away as if his skin burned.
That was when I saw it.
On Vincent’s left ring finger sat the plain platinum band we had exchanged at the altar five years ago. Scratched, worn, but polished bright. He had never removed it.
""You're wearing that,"" I whispered, the words escaping before I could stop them. ""Why would you wear that? You told me you regretted marrying me.""
""I was a fool out of my mind with exhaustion, Claire,"" he rasped, taking another desperate step toward me. His hands twitched at his sides, fighting the urge to grab me and pull me against his chest. ""I said the one thing I knew would hurt you because I didn't know how to reach you anymore. You locked yourself in the nursery, you looked at me like I was a monster, and when I tried to fix it, I only destroyed everything. I haven't slept a full night since the morning I woke up to an empty closet and your keys on the counter.""
""You gave my mother’s bracelet to Sophia,"" I said, my voice shaking with three years of buried agony. ""You let her smash the last piece of my mother I had left in this world on the floor, and you told me it was just jewelry. You chose her.""
""I didn't give it to her!"" Vincent’s voice cracked, a desperate edge bleeding through his composure. ""Sophia stole the receipt from my study and intercepted the courier! The sapphire wasn't broken by accident—she broke it because she knew it was repaired for you! I fired half my household staff that night trying to figure out how she got into the safe! Why didn't you let me explain?""
Before I could process the shock crashing through my mind, a warm, steady hand rested gently against the small of my back.
""Is there an issue here, darling?""

The voice was deep, cultured, and laced with quiet steel. Julian Vance, world-renowned jewelry magnate, head of Vance International, and my design mentor, stepped into the light. He was striking, immaculate in a midnight-blue tuxedo, holding a small plate of appetizers in one hand and looking down at Vincent with cool, calculating emerald eyes.
Noah cheered and reached upward. ""Daddy! You brought the crab cakes!""
