Chapter 7 - Thunder on the Tarmac

Rain lashed across the tarmac of the county airport in sheets of white spray. The twin turbofan engines of the Gulfstream G650 screamed as they spooled up, their exhaust distorting the yellow runway lights behind them.
Inside the private hangar, Evelyn Vance paced furiously near the passenger stairs, clutching a heavy aluminum flight case. Her silk scarf was soaked, and her eyes darted toward the runway gates with frantic desperation.
""Tell the pilot to throttle up now!"" she screamed at the flight attendant over the roar of the engines. ""We don't need tower clearance! I will pay whatever fine the FAA issues!""
""They can't take off, Evelyn,"" a clear, powerful voice called out through the rain.
Evelyn spun around.
Nathan Weller walked through the wide hangar doors, flanked by four county sheriff deputies and two state troopers. Beside him walked Claire, wearing a heavy black winter coat over her factory uniform, her eyes cold and unflinching.
Two police cruisers screeched onto the concrete behind them, their red and blue strobe lights painting the wet pavement in vivid flashes of blood and ice.
Evelyn backed toward the airplane stairs, clutching the aluminum case to her chest like a shield. ""Nathan! Stay back! You have no jurisdiction here! I am an equal partner in this corporation! If you try to detain me, I will file a federal lawsuit that will freeze every asset Weller Automotive owns!""
""You're not filing anything,"" Claire said, stepping past the deputies and stopping ten feet from the foot of the stairs. ""The Saint Jude’s visitor log is already at the district attorney's office. Susan Pike just gave a sworn three-hour deposition to state investigators about the hush money you paid her to keep me trapped on Line Four. And the maintenance tapes from 1999 are being digitalized right now.""
Evelyn’s face twisted into an expression of pure, unadulterated hatred. The aristocratic mask she had worn for decades peeled away, revealing the bitter, venomous soul beneath.
""You should have died in that hospital!"" Evelyn screamed at Claire, her voice cracking over the jet whine. ""You were nothing! A miserable, crying little parasite that took everything from me! Sarah had Nathan’s love, she had the family fortune, she had the world—and then she gave him an heir! I spent ten years building his company from a two-bit machine shop while Sarah sat in her garden wearing diamonds!""
Nathan stepped forward, his eyes burning with cold rage. ""Sarah loved you like a sister, Evelyn. She gave you thirty percent of our venture capital out of pure generosity.""
""She gave me scraps!"" Evelyn shrieked, spitting into the wind. ""I deserved the whole empire! When I took the brat, I thought Sarah would divorce you and you would finally see who was truly by your side! But you stayed obsessed with a ghost! You spent millions every year searching for a dead child while I did the actual work!""
""She wasn't dead,"" Claire said, her voice cutting through the storm like a knife. ""She was surviving every cold room, every broken promise, and every hard shift you threw at her. And now she's standing right in front of you.""
The lead sheriff stepped forward, unholstering a pair of heavy steel handcuffs. ""Evelyn Vance, you are under arrest for federal kidnapping, interstate trafficking of a minor, corporate embezzlement, and criminal conspiracy. Put the case down and put your hands behind your back.""
Evelyn looked at the runway, then at the deputies, and finally at Claire. With a ragged, defeated scream, she hurled the aluminum case onto the wet tarmac. Bundles of bearer bonds and foreign currency spilled across the concrete, soaking into the black puddles.
As the deputies forced Evelyn's arms behind her back and snapped the cold steel cuffs over her wrists, Claire walked up until she was standing inches from the woman who had stolen her life.
Claire reached out, caught the gold chain around Evelyn's neck, and snapped it with one sharp, effortless pull.

The antique emerald teardrop fell into Claire's palm.
""This belonged to my mother,"" Claire whispered. ""And you will never touch anything of hers again.""
