Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Well

The paper slipped from Dr. Morrison’s fingers and drifted to the mahogany floor.
Nathan dropped to his knees in front of Claire’s chair. He didn't care about his four-thousand-dollar suit, his board of directors, or the guards standing outside the door. He reached out with both hands, taking Claire’s rough, calloused fingers into his own, and pressed his forehead against them. Great, racking sobs tore through his chest—the sound of twenty-four years of buried mourning, guilt, and unanswered prayers tearing out of a broken man's heart.
""Clara,"" he wept, his tears soaking into her work uniform. ""My baby. Clara, I'm so sorry. I looked everywhere. I looked in every city. I never stopped.""
Claire sat completely paralyzed. Her mind refused to process the shift in reality. Two hours ago, she was a disposable assembly line hand on the verge of eviction, kneeling in industrial grime to protect her grandmother's medicine. Now, one of the most powerful industrial tycoons in the Midwest was weeping at her feet, calling her his lost child.
Behind them, Evelyn Vance’s hand closed tightly over her leather handbag. Her knuckles turned dead white, and for a fraction of a second, raw panic flashed across her aristocratic features before she masked it with a radiant, counterfeit smile.
""My God,"" Evelyn gasped, bringing her hands together in theatrical awe. ""Nathan... it's a miracle! An absolute miracle from heaven! All those years of hoping... and she was right here in our own facility!""
She stepped forward, extending two perfectly manicured hands toward Claire. ""Clara, darling, you have no idea what this means to this family. I'm Evelyn Vance, your father's executive partner. We're going to take care of everything. We'll get you out of those awful clothes, set you up in the penthouse suite at the Grand, and—""
""Don't touch me,"" Claire said. Her voice was flat, sharp, and cold as an iron girder.
Evelyn stopped mid-reach, her eyes flashing with irritation. ""Excuse me?""
""You stood on the factory floor two hours ago and told Susan Pike that I was insolent and negligent,"" Claire said, standing up and gently pulling her hands back from Nathan. She looked down at Evelyn with the sharp, street-tested intuition she had developed surviving four rough foster homes. ""You smiled while Susan told me to get on my knees. You didn't care about a miracle when you thought I was nobody. Don't start pretending you care now.""
Nathan slowly stood up, wiping the tears from his face with the back of his sleeve. His expression hardened as he looked at Evelyn. The emotional warmth that had filled the room vanished, replaced by the razor-sharp mind of an apex corporate predator.
""Evelyn,"" Nathan said quietly.
""Yes, Nathan?"" she asked, her voice slightly too sweet.
""Twenty-four years ago, you were Sarah’s personal assistant at our home in Lake Forest,"" Nathan said, his voice dangerously level. ""You were the one who arranged Sarah’s private wing at Saint Jude’s. You recommended the private security firm that monitored the maternity ward.""
Evelyn’s smile stiffened. ""Nathan, that was a quarter of a century ago. We were all devastated by what happened. Why would you bring that up now?""
""Because for twenty-four years, the Chicago police told me the kidnapping was an inside job,"" Nathan replied, stepping closer to her. ""They said whoever took Clara knew the exact maintenance schedule for the nursery cameras. They knew the floor nurse took her break at nine-fifteen. They knew the back fire door had a broken latch that hadn't been reported to the head of security.""
""Are you accusing me?"" Evelyn’s voice rose, a sharp edge of indignation cutting through her polished veneer. ""After everything I have done for this company? After I stood by you when Sarah died and helped you build Weller Automotive into an empire? I was like a sister to your late wife!""
""You were Sarah’s maid of honor,"" Nathan agreed coldly. ""And three months after Sarah was buried, you brought me the papers to consolidate her family trust into our joint venture. When I refused to remarry, you took forty percent of the voting shares as compensation for your management contracts.""
Nathan turned to Arthur, his head of security. ""Put two men on Miss Vance's office. Confiscate her company laptop, her private phone, and every archive drive in her possession. If a single document leaves her desk, treat it as corporate espionage.""

""You can't do this!"" Evelyn shrieked, dropping all pretense of gentility. Her face twisted into an ugly sneer. ""You have no proof of anything! You're letting an uneducated, grease-stained gutter rat blind you with a fairy tale! I built this company, Nathan! You touch my office, and the board will remove you by tomorrow morning!""
""Let them try,"" Nathan whispered. ""Get her out of my sight.""
