Chapter 8 - The Line in the Sand

Camilla spun around, her aristocratic composure instantly faltering as Lorenzo stepped out from the private elevator bay.

He wore a dark navy three-piece suit, his overcoat unbuttoned, his expression so terrifyingly cold that the restaurant staff near the bar immediately retreated into the kitchen.

Dante trailed three paces behind him, his arms folded across his chest, watching the family confrontation with absolute detachment.

“Lorenzo,” Camilla gasped, her hand flying to her pearl necklace. “I was merely… I was checking in on the staff. There have been rumors circulating among the families in Queens—”

“You do not speak to Harper,” Lorenzo interrupted, each syllable falling like a slab of granite onto the floor between them. “You do not enter my restaurant to interrogate my people, and you do not speak for the Moretti name.”

Camilla’s cheeks flushed crimson beneath her powder.

“I am your brother’s widow, Lorenzo!” she hissed, lowering her voice in desperate embarrassment. “I protected this family’s reputation for thirty years! People are talking! They say you’ve lost your mind over a girl half your age!”

Lorenzo took two slow, measured steps forward, towering over his sister-in-law with an authority that had crushed syndicate rebellions for decades.

“Let them talk,” Lorenzo said softly, his voice dropping into a register that made Camilla take a step backward. “And tell anyone who has an opinion about my personal life that they are welcome to bring their concerns to the council floor on Monday morning.”

He paused, his eyes narrowing into slits of pure slate.

“If you ever approach Harper again, Camilla,” Lorenzo continued, “I will permanently revoke your monthly dividend from the transit trusts and reassign your seat on the foundation board to Dante.”

Camilla’s mouth dropped open in sheer, unadulterated shock.

The monthly dividend was nearly thirty thousand dollars. To threaten her position on the foundation board was to strip her of everything that gave her status in New York society.

Without another word, Camilla clutched her handbag to her chest, turned on her designer heels, and hurried out of the restaurant, the glass doors clicking shut behind her retreating figure.

The dining room fell into an echoing, breathless silence.

Lorenzo turned slowly toward Harper.

The lethal mask of the Don dissolved instantly, replaced by a look of deep, vulnerable anxiety that made him look human, real, and entirely hers.

“Did she hurt you?” he asked, his voice thick with concern.

Harper looked at the powerful man who had just threatened to dismantle his own family’s social hierarchy to shield her from an insult.

She shook her head slowly, a warm, radiant smile breaking across her face through the remnants of the shock.

“No, Lorenzo,” she whispered. “Nobody can hurt me when you’re standing there.”

Lorenzo let out a long, ragged exhale, closing the distance between them.

He reached out, his large hands gently framing her face, his thumbs stroking the soft skin above her cheekbones with an intensity that took her breath away.

“I don’t care about the thirty-four years between us, Harper,” Lorenzo whispered, his voice trembling with an honesty he had buried for over a decade. “I don’t care about the rumors, the council, or the traditions of this city. All I know is that when I look at you, I want to live again.”

May you like

Harper leaned into his palms, her own hands rising to rest over his strong, scarred wrists, her heart pounding in sweet, glorious surrender.

“Then stop being a ghost, Lorenzo,” she murmured softly, looking up into his gray eyes. “And live with me.”
