Chapter 6 - The Traitor's True Face

By 6:30 a.m., heavy morning fog rolled off Lake Michigan, swallowing the sprawling industrial docks of Calumet Avenue in a dense, ghostly shroud. Inside Warehouse 9, a rusted cathedral of corrugated iron and rotting timber, Salvatore Marchetti paced impatiently along the catwalk overlooking the loading floor.

Below him stood twenty heavily armed mercenaries, their assault rifles slung low, guarding dozens of wooden crates labeled as classical antiquities. Inside those crates, however, were not centuries-old sculptures, but illicit high-grade narcotics, untraceable bearer bonds, and crates of military weaponry destined for the Petrov Syndicate.

In the center of the concrete floor, tied to a heavy wooden chair beneath a single hanging bulb, sat Evelyn Hayes. Her face was bruised, her dark hair matted with dried blood, but her eyes blazed with defiance as she looked up at the man who had ruined her life.

""Where is the microfiche, Evelyn?"" Salvatore sneered, walking down the metal stairs, his polished Italian leather shoes clicking against the iron steps. He was an impeccably dressed man in his late fifties, his silver hair combed back, his silk tie immaculate despite the dirt of the docks. ""You played a very foolish game. You thought Roman Viscari would care about a restorer and her brat? Roman is a butcher! He doesn't protect people; he erases them!""

Evelyn spat a mouthful of blood onto the concrete near his shoes. ""Roman Viscari is a man of honor. You are nothing but a thief who murders his own brothers in the dark. You killed Marco because he wouldn't let you sell this city to monsters.""

Salvatore’s face twisted into an ugly, furious mask. He stepped forward and raised his hand to strike her across the face. ""Marco was an obstacle! He believed in outdated traditions, family honor, and loyalty! There is no loyalty in this business—there is only leverage and profit! And when Roman’s corpse is pulled from the river, I will take the Viscari empire and hand it to partners who understand the modern world!""

""You're wrong about Roman,"" Evelyn whispered coldly, a faint, mocking smile touching her swollen lips. ""He is already here.""

Before Salvatore could respond, the heavy steel roll-up doors of the warehouse blew inward with an earth-shattering explosion. A concussive blast of heat, smoke, and shrapnel tore through the entrance, instantly knocking half of Salvatore’s mercenaries off their feet.

Through the roaring wall of fire and swirling gray smoke, three heavy armored tactical vehicles smashed through the wreckage, their high-intensity searchlights piercing the darkness like blazing spears. Armed men in black tactical gear poured out, securing the perimeter with lethal, coordinated efficiency.

And walking down the center of the smoke-filled breach, unhurried, towering, and utterly terrifying, came Roman Viscari.

He wore no body armor, only his tailored dark overcoat, his silver signet ring gleaming under the flickering emergency lights. In his right hand, he held a combat shotgun; in his eyes burned the absolute promise of death.

""Salvatore,"" Roman’s voice cut through the cavernous warehouse, deep and thunderous, silencing the groans of the wounded. ""You sat at my father's table for thirty years. You toasted my brother’s memory while his blood was still wet on your hands. Today, you settle your account.""
