Chapter 2 - The Secret in the Cotton

Roman’s gaze dropped instantly to the ragged doll. To any casual observer, Rosalind was nothing more than an ordinary, child-worn toy stuffed with coarse fiber and stitched with mismatched blue thread. But Roman had survived fifteen years at the top of the Chicago underworld by noticing the millimeter differences between life and death. He gently extended his hand, palm up, asking permission rather than demanding it.

""May I see Rosalind, Clara? Just for a moment. I promise I will give her right back.""

Clara hesitated, searching Roman's eyes. In those steel-gray irises, she saw no cruelty, only a fierce, protective stillness. She slowly released the doll and placed it into his massive, scarred hands.

Roman brought the toy close to the dim halogen lamp on the counter. Turning Rosalind over, he examined the seam along the doll's back. The original manufacturer’s stitching was tight, machine-pressed nylon, but along the left shoulder blade, the seam had been carefully opened and resealed with crude, hurried hand stitches using clear monofilament fishing line.

Taking a small folding blade from his pocket, Roman pressed the tip against the clear line and severed the threads with surgical precision. Clara watched wide-eyed, holding her breath. Roman parted the plush stuffing, reaching deep into the doll’s torso. His fingers brushed against something hard, flat, and cold.

He pulled it out: a micro SD card, encased in a sliver of waterproof electrical tape, accompanied by a small brass key stamped with the number 404.

Roman smoothed the doll's back, neatly tucked the cotton back into place, and handed Rosalind straight back to Clara. ""You took incredible care of her,"" Roman said, his voice deep and warm. ""Your mother knew you were the bravest girl in the city.""

Clara clutched Rosalind back to her chest, burying her chin in the doll’s hair, and smiled a faint, genuine smile for the first time since the shooting at the cathedral.

Roman moved to his tactical laptop set up on the laminate kitchen table. He inserted the micro SD card through an encrypted reader, bypassing standard operating systems to prevent any outbound pinging signals. When the drive decrypted, three folders populated the screen: Viscari Inventory Ledger, The Redacted Provenance, and Audio Memos.

Roman clicked on the audio file first. A woman’s voice filled his earpieces—soft, cultivated, but trembling with absolute terror.

""If anyone is hearing this... if Roman Viscari is hearing this... my name is Evelyn Hayes. Two weeks ago, Salvatore Marchetti brought an Italian Renaissance piece to my studio—'The Madonna of the Lilies.' He ordered an aggressive restoration of the underpainting. But beneath the base pigments, someone had embedded microfiche negative records containing foreign wire transfers, offshore bank account numbers, and the execution order for Marco Viscari. Marco had discovered that Salvatore was selling out the Viscari territories to the Petrov Syndicate in New York. Salvatore ordered Marco’s hit, and he framed the local families to start a street war. Salvatore came to my shop yesterday. He threatened to take Clara if I didn't hand over the canvas. I hid the true under-layer inside a safe deposit box at the Old South Loop Vaults—Box 404. I am sending Clara to the cathedral tonight. Roman, they say you are a monster. But Marco once told me you would tear down the sky to protect blood. Clara is an innocent child. Please... don't let them kill my baby.""

The audio file ended with the distant sound of breaking glass and a choked gasp before cutting to static.

Roman sat entirely motionless for a full minute. The silence in the safehouse was deafening. Marco hadn't died in a random dispute. His own brother had been slaughtered because Salvatore Marchetti wanted to sell the family’s empire to Russian wolves from the East Coast.

""Boss,"" Dante’s voice came crackling through the encrypted radio on the counter. ""We intercepted a dispatch on the syndicate's back-channel. Salvatore just put a three-million-dollar open contract on your head—and a one-million-dollar bounty on the child. Every mercenary, dirty cop, and rogue enforcer in the Midwest is scouring the city for you two right now.""

Roman leaned forward, his eyes burning with an icy fire. ""Tell the men who are still loyal to assemble at the south railyards. We aren't hiding on Damen Avenue anymore, Dante. Salvatore thinks he turned Chicago into a hunting ground. It’s time he remembers who owns this city.""
