Chapter 1 - The Trap in the Terminal

The digital terminal in the dock administration office hummed in the dim light.

Vincent Romano stood motionless behind Marcus Valente, watching the forensic digital trace illuminate the dark monitor screen. Each green line of code traced the unauthorized schedule shift directly to a physical workstation located inside Anthony Romano’s private waterfront suite.

“It wasn't just a remote hack,” Marcus said, pointing at the timestamp displayed on the screen. “The override authorization was confirmed with a biometric thumbprint scan at twelve-twelve midnight. Only three people have that security clearance.”

Vincent’s jaw tightened into iron.

He didn't speak immediately. The silence in the surveillance room was colder than the autumn wind sweeping across the harbor.

Anthony had grown up in the Romano household. They had shared Sunday dinners, family celebrations, and the bloodlines of a dynasty built over three generations.

“Call the executive floor,” Vincent commanded, his voice deadly quiet. “Tell my cousin I want an emergency briefing on the dock tariffs at midnight. In the glass boardroom.”

Marcus turned with a grim nod. “And if he suspects something and tries to run?”

“He won't run yet,” Vincent replied, his dark eyes fixed on the illuminated logs. “Anthony thinks Peter Sloan succeeded in disappearing. He thinks the poisoned courier buried the trail.”

Meanwhile, on the residential floor of the mansion, Sophie sat in the private study beside her mother.

Maria Alvarez held her daughter tightly, her hands still shaking from the memory of the photograph found on Sloan’s abandoned motorcycle. Two armed Romano sentries stood guard right outside the double oak doors, their assault rifles held across their tactical vests.

Sophie held her stuffed rabbit by its worn ear, looking up at the heavy mahogany desk.

“Mommy, is the man with the snake coming back?” the little girl asked in a quiet whisper.

Maria pressed a soft kiss against Sophie’s dark curls, blinking back tears of terror. “No, sweetheart. Mr. Romano promised we are safe here. Nobody can get inside this house.”

The door opened with a soft click, and Vincent stepped into the warm study.

The hard, predatory mask that ruled the underworld softened the moment his eyes landed on the child sitting on the leather sofa. He walked over slowly, deliberately unbuttoning his tailored dark overcoat and kneeling before the coffee table.

“How are you holding up, Sophie?” he asked gently.

Sophie looked at him with wide, serious eyes. “The rabbit was scared of the loud trucks, Mr. Vincent. But I told him you were watching the doors.”

Vincent offered a faint, solemn smile.

He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a small silver medallion bearing the Romano family crest—a crowned falcon perched on a shield. He placed the heavy silver pendant directly into Sophie’s small palm.

“This belonged to my mother,” Vincent said softly. “Anyone wearing this badge in Chicago has the full protection of every man who works for me. If anyone ever makes you feel afraid, you show them this.”

Maria gasped, her hands trembling as she looked at the priceless heirloom. “Mr. Romano, please, this is too much. Sophie only told the truth.”

“Sophie saved my life, Maria,” Vincent said, standing tall and meeting the mother’s fearful gaze. “And in my world, loyalty from a child is worth more than all the gold sitting in my vaults.”

A soft knock came at the doorframe. Marcus stepped in, his expression tight and pale.

“Vincent,” Marcus whispered from the threshold. “The outer gate sensor just tripped at the old carriage house. Daniel Mercer’s burner phone just registered on the cell tower two blocks away.”
