Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Surprise

At eleven-fifteen, the process server, an imposing former bailiff named Marcus, arrived at Apex Digital carrying a blue manila envelope stamped with the seal of the Circuit Court of Cook County. Per Evelyn’s instructions, Marcus didn't wait quietly in the lobby. He carried a court order demanding immediate service upon Miles Miller and the corporate benefits director.
Miles was in the middle of presenting his third-quarter client acquisition deck when the frosted glass doors of the boardroom swung open. Twenty-five senior executives, including the CEO, Marcus Vance, turned their heads in irritation at the interruption.
"Excuse me," Miles snapped, pausing his slide deck with a laser pointer held in his hand. "This is a closed executive presentation. You cannot be in here."
Marcus didn't blink. He walked straight down the center aisle, past the rows of mahogany tables, and stopped directly in front of Miles. "Miles Miller?"
"Yes, but you need to—"
"You have been served," Marcus stated in a clear, carrying baritone that resonated through the room. He dropped the heavy envelope directly onto the podium, knocking Miles's tablet aside. "Court order from Cook County Family Court. Emergency injunction regarding child medical neglect, fraudulent benefit enrollment, and immediate payroll garnishment under federal ERISA enforcement."
A collective gasp rippled across the room. Several junior vice presidents leaned back in their chairs, exchange wide-eyed glances.
Miles’s face transformed from indignant authority to pure, unadulterated horror. "This is a private matter! This is ridiculous! Security, escort this man out!"
"Copies have already been delivered to your Director of Human Resources and your General Counsel," Marcus added calmly before turning on his heel and walking out.
Miles scrambled to scoop up the scattered papers, his hands shaking so violently that three pages slipped from his grip and fluttered onto the table in front of Marcus Vance, the CEO. Vance, an austere sixty-year-old executive who prided himself on corporate ethics and public philanthropy, looked down at the court findings.
The first page clearly displayed the name Vanessa Lynn Thorne alongside the court's finding of fraudulent benefit claims and unauthorized domestic partner declarations.
Vance slowly raised his eyes, fixing a lethal stare on Miles. "Miles. Step into my office. Now."
Across the boardroom table, sitting among the creative staff, Vanessa Thorne turned pale as milk. She grabbed her leather portfolio, pushed her chair back, and attempted to slip out the side exit. But the HR director, Brenda, was already standing at the door with two building security guards.

Within forty-five minutes, Miles’s corporate access badge had been deactivated, his laptop seized by forensic IT specialists, and both he and Vanessa were placed on indefinite, unpaid administrative suspension pending an investigation into internal embezzlement and sexual harassment under corporate ethics bylaws.
His desperate plan to look like the high-earning corporate titan who could crush his wife in court had evaporated in less than an hour.
