Chapter 6 - The Emergency Petition

At eight o'clock the next morning, I stood inside the Cook County Courthouse with Evelyn at my side. Louisa was asleep in her car seat carrier, covered by a light muslin blanket, completely oblivious to the legal storm gathering around her father.

Evelyn marched me straight into the chambers of Judge Maria Santos, an experienced family court jurist known for having zero tolerance for deadbeat or deceptive parents. Evelyn laid out the documentation with surgical precision: the timeline of Louisa's birth, the written text messages where Miles repeatedly lied about submitting the benefits paperwork, the certified HR logs proving he attempted to replace his wife with a junior employee, and the bank transfers routing family health funds to account 4109.

Judge Santos reviewed the documents in silence, her reading glasses perched on the tip of her nose. The only sound in the room was the soft ticking of the wall clock and Louisa’s gentle breathing.

When the judge finally looked up, her expression was severe. "Counselor, you are telling me this father willfully allowed the statutory thirty-day infant enrollment window to lapse while actively diverting household funds to an unrelated third party?"

"That is correct, Your Honor," Evelyn stated firmly. "Furthermore, the respondent threatened the petitioner last night with financial starvation and frivolous custody challenges when confronted with the evidence. We are requesting an immediate Qualified Medical Child Support Order compelling Apex Digital to enroll the infant immediately, retroactive to her date of birth, alongside temporary exclusive possession of the marital home and a freeze on all joint financial accounts."

Judge Santos didn't hesitate. She picked up her pen and signed the emergency order with three decisive strokes. "Order granted. The father’s access to the marital residence is suspended pending a formal hearing in fourteen days. The employer is directed under federal ERISA provisions to execute immediate enrollment of Louisa Miller within forty-eight hours of service. And Mr. Miller is prohibited from transferring, withdrawing, or encumbering any financial assets exceeding one hundred dollars without prior court approval."

"Thank you, Your Honor," I said, a wave of relief washing over me so powerful my knees almost buckled.

We walked out of the courtroom with certified copies in hand. By ten o'clock, Evelyn’s process server was dispatched to Apex Digital’s corporate headquarters on Wacker Drive.

I didn't want revenge. I wanted security for my daughter. But as I strapped Louisa back into her car seat, I received a calendar notification on my phone. Apex Digital’s quarterly all-hands meeting was scheduled for eleven-thirty that morning. The entire executive suite, including the founding partners and board members, would be assembled in the glass boardroom on the thirty-second floor.

Miles had spent six years prioritizing his corporate image over our family. Today, that very image was about to become his undoing.
