Chapter 1 - The Broken Bridegroom And The Missing Evidence

The sterile scent of the hospital emergency room mixed with the bitter taste of betrayal as I stared at the ceiling lights. My right leg was encased in a heavy medical harness, the internal metal pins completely shattered from Sutton's malicious shove. Outside, the ocean breeze of the luxury resort was supposed to carry the sounds of wedding bells, but all I could hear was the mocking echo of my sister’s laughter. ""It was just content! Fallon, why are you crying for attention?""

Those words burned into my memory, fueling a cold, steady fury that replaced the physical agony. My parents had abandoned me at the hospital, opting to take a cheap taxi rather than miss the pre-rehearsal dinner cocktails, ordering me via text to return and apologize to preserve the family aesthetic. But the most shocking development of that horrifying evening wasn't my family's cruelty—it was Alden.

Hours earlier, standing at the top of that marble staircase, Alden had witnessed the entire incident. More importantly, he had heard Sutton's confession slip out when she thought no one was listening. He had dropped his glass, turned his back on the woman he was supposed to marry the next morning, and walked straight out through the glass doors into the night.

As I lay in the hospital bed waiting for the orthopedic surgeon to schedule a grueling eight-month wheelchair-bound recovery, my phone buzzed violently. It was an incoming call from an unknown number. I swiped the screen and pressed it to my ear.

“Fallon? It’s Alden,” a strained voice whispered.

I sat up slightly, wincing as pain shot through my knee. “Alden? Where are you? Everyone at the resort is looking for you. My mother is threatening to call the police for disturbing the peace.”

“Let her,” Alden replied bitterly, his voice shaking with suppressed rage. “I’m not at the resort. I checked out an hour ago. Fallon, I am so deeply sorry. I saw what Sutton did. I saw her deliberately kick your ankle and shove you down those stairs. And I recorded the whole thing on my dashcam link when she bragged about getting rid of your 'robotic abomination' in the parking garage earlier that morning.”

My breath caught in my throat. “You have a recording?”

“I do,” Alden confirmed firmly. “And that’s not all. For months, Sutton has been draining joint accounts that we set up for the wedding. But tonight, while looking for my passport in her designer luggage, I found something else—financial statements showing she didn’t just steal from our wedding fund. She accessed corporate wire transfers using my administrative credentials. She drained your company’s inspection contract deposit account, Fallon. Every single penny of your $85,000 contract is gone.”

The room seemed to spin. That $85,000 contract with the aviation firm was the culmination of two years of exhausting freelance engineering work, designed to fund my independent testing laboratory. Without it, my business would fold before it even launched.

“How?” I whispered, my hands trembling against the white hospital sheets. “How could she access my corporate account?”

“Your mother had your laptop during Thanksgiving,” Alden said grimly. “She snooped through your tax forms and saved your banking credentials in a shared family cloud folder. Sutton had the password all along. She used it to pay for the resort's luxury upgrade package, the helicopter charter, and her custom diamond reception shoes—all billed directly to your business account.”

A profound, suffocating silence settled over the line. For thirty-four years, my family had treated my achievements as common property, my savings as their personal piggy bank, and my physical disabilities as an embarrassing inconvenience. But this wasn’t just sibling rivalry or emotional abuse anymore. This was financial fraud, grand larceny, and corporate sabotage.

“Alden,” I said, my voice dropping an octave into a tone of absolute, chilling resolve. “Are you willing to testify against her?”

“Try me,” Alden answered without a moment's hesitation. “I’m done covering for monsters. Tell me what you need me to do, Fallon. I’ll burn her entire world down to the ground.”
