Chapter 10 - Where the Morning Begins

One year later.
The early autumn sun rose over the historic brick buildings of Fell’s Point, painting the waters of Baltimore Harbor in shades of hammered gold and copper.
At 7:00 AM, the double glass doors of the newly opened Brooks Community Health Center swung open, welcoming the morning shift of nurses, doctors, and neighborhood families.
The clinic stood as a state-of-the-art facility providing free pediatric, cardiac, and preventive care to thousands of shipyard workers and their children, funded entirely by the Calloway-Brooks Foundation.
Maya Brooks walked through the bright, sun-drenched atrium, wearing a crisp navy scrub set, holding a clipboard with the morning patient schedules.
She was radiant, her face rested and full of life, her dark hair shining under the skylights.
Her mother, Linda, sat in the reception area, volunteering three mornings a week, helping young mothers fill out intake forms while sharing warm laughter over fresh tea.
“Your shift is officially over, Director Brooks,” Caleb Price called out with a grin as he walked past the desk, looking healthy, vigorous, and completely recovered in a sharp gray suit.
“Just finishing the cardiac triage notes, Caleb,” Maya laughed, tucking her pen behind her ear.
She clocked out at the electronic terminal, slipped her woolen coat over her shoulders, and pushed open the front glass doors into the crisp morning air.
Idling at the curb beneath the golden maple trees was a sleek black SUV.
Maya smiled, a warm, familiar flutter taking flight in her chest.
She didn't hesitate. She walked down the stone steps with light, confident strides, opened the rear door, and climbed inside.
Ethan Calloway was sitting in the corner seat, wearing a soft charcoal sweater with his sleeves pushed up, reading a morning maritime report on his tablet.
When she sat down beside him, he set the tablet aside, a slow, breathtaking smile curving his lips as his gray eyes locked onto hers with boundless warmth.
“Rough shift, Nurse Brooks?” Ethan murmured, his voice rich and full of humor.
“Exhausting,” Maya sighed happily, leaning her head naturally against his broad, solid shoulder, inhaling the familiar scent of cedar, fresh coffee, and clean autumn air.
Ethan lifted his arm, wrapping it securely around her, pulling her close against his side as the car pulled smoothly away from the curb.
“Where to, ma’am?” Ethan asked softly, his thumb gently stroking her knuckles, where a delicate band of woven platinum and gold caught the morning light.
Maya closed her eyes, letting the quiet rhythm of the road carry away the last remnants of fatigue, feeling safer and more cherished than she had ever dreamed possible.

“Just take me home, Ethan,” she whispered with a contented smile.
Ethan kissed the top of her head, holding her tight against his heart as the black SUV surged forward into the brilliant, golden dawn of a brand-new life.
