Chapter 6 - Dinner on the Terrace

Vanessa appeared at breakfast the next morning wearing white linen and enormous sunglasses.

She behaved as though nothing had happened.

“Morning.”

Daniel stared at her.

I took a sip of coffee.

“Good morning.”

She sat down.

“I think yesterday became unnecessarily dramatic.”

Daniel almost laughed.

I touched his wrist beneath the table.

Not yet.

Vanessa continued.

“I want us to reset.”

“How generous,” I said.

She ignored the sarcasm.

“So dinner tonight. Seven o’clock. Private terrace.”

Daniel looked at me.

I smiled.

“Of course.”

Vanessa relaxed.

That told me everything.

She still intended to proceed.

Throughout the day, Marcus quietly reviewed additional footage.

Richard contacted our legal counsel.

Our bank froze any suspicious applications.

Meanwhile, I spent three hours on the beach.

Vanessa expected me to be furious.

Instead, I read a book.

At seven, we gathered on the private terrace.

Vanessa had decorated beautifully.

Candles.

Flowers.

Crystal glasses.

The sunset burned orange across the ocean.

Amanda was there.

So were two men I didn’t recognize.

Vanessa introduced them.

“Trevor Lane and Michael Reeves. Business consultants.”

Trevor smiled too widely.

Michael avoided eye contact.

Dinner began.

Vanessa played the perfect hostess.

She complimented me.

Praised Daniel.

Talked about family legacy.

Then dessert arrived.

And so did the folder.

My stomach tightened.

Vanessa placed it beside my plate.

“I actually planned something meaningful for this trip.”

Daniel remained silent.

“What’s that?” I asked.

“A family estate strategy.”

She opened the folder.

Exactly as expected.

Documents.

Charts.

Legal language.

Buried in the middle was the forged declaration about my memory.

Vanessa turned to a signature page.

“This simplifies everything.”

I looked at Trevor.

“You prepared this?”

He cleared his throat.

“Our firm assisted with some structuring.”

“What firm?”

“Lane Strategic Consulting.”

“I see.”

I turned to Michael.

“And you?”

“Financial planning.”

“Licensed?”

He hesitated.

“Yes.”

Marcus was recording from inside through the terrace security system.

Every word mattered.

Vanessa tapped the signature line.

“This gives Daniel authority to assist you with business decisions.”

Daniel stared at her.

“Assist?”

She shot him a warning look.

I turned several pages.

“And this section?”

“Standard protection.”

“It says Daniel receives controlling authority if two people determine I lack capacity.”

Vanessa smiled.

“Just a precaution.”

“Who are the two people?”

Silence.

I continued reading.

“Apparently, one is Daniel.”

Vanessa nodded.

“And the other is you.”

Her smile disappeared.

Daniel leaned forward.

“You told me this only let me help Mom.”

“It does.”

“No. It lets you decide she’s incompetent.”

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“You agreed to support me tonight.”

“I agreed to dinner.”

Trevor slowly pushed back his chair.

“This sounds like a family matter.”

“It became your matter when you prepared the documents,” I said.

He stopped.

I removed another paper from my purse.

The failed four-million-dollar loan request.

Amanda went pale.

Vanessa stared at me.

“Where did you get that?”

Daniel whispered, “Wrong question.”

Vanessa stood.

“You had no right to investigate me!”

I almost admired the audacity.

“You tried to borrow four million dollars against my company.”

“It was never finalized.”

“Because my employees stopped it.”

Amanda turned toward Vanessa.

“You told me the money was approved.”

“Shut up.”

Amanda stood.

“No. You said Margaret had already agreed!”

Vanessa slammed her hand on the table.

“I said shut up!”

Daniel rose.

“Enough.”

His voice was stronger than I had heard in years.

Vanessa froze.

He looked at her.

“Did you plan this vacation just to get Mom’s signature?”

She said nothing.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Answer me.”

Finally, Vanessa whispered, “We needed the money.”

“We?”

She looked toward Amanda.

Then Trevor.

Then Michael.

Nobody met her eyes.

Daniel’s face changed.

“So that’s it?”

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“You don’t understand.”

“I understand perfectly.”

He removed his wedding ring.

Vanessa stared at it.

“Daniel.”

He placed it on the table.

“You lied to me.”

“Daniel, don’t.”

“You stole from us.”

“I can fix it.”

“You tried to steal from my mother.”

Her face broke.

He pushed the ring toward her.

“I’m done.”

Vanessa screamed.

Then she grabbed the folder and tried to run.

She made it three steps.

Marcus emerged through the terrace door.

Vanessa stopped.

May you like

Behind him stood two uniformed police officers.

And suddenly, the entire carefully constructed evening collapsed.
