Chapter 5 - Four Million Dollars

I read the document twice.

Then a third time.

“Was the loan approved?”

“No,” Richard said. “Our banking partner contacted the corporate office for verification.”

“Why didn’t I know?”

“The request was flagged and rejected before reaching formal underwriting. Our finance team assumed it was fraud.”

Marcus pointed toward the contact information.

“She used a private email address.”

Vanessa’s name was everywhere.

Yet the application identified her as an authorized representative of Whitmore Coastal Holdings.

She wasn’t.

She had never worked for my company.

Never held shares.

Never sat on the board.

Never received financial authority.

Daniel came back downstairs twenty minutes later.

His face looked completely different.

Older somehow.

He entered the security room and closed the door.

“She admitted it.”

I waited.

“The loan?”

His eyes widened.

“What loan?”

I handed him the paper.

He read it.

Then sat down.

“Oh my God.”

“What did she admit?”

Daniel stared at the floor.

“She’s been taking money from our joint savings.”

“How much?”

“Almost ninety thousand dollars.”

I froze.

He continued.

“She told me we had around two hundred thousand saved.”

“And?”

“We have seventeen.”

Seventeen thousand.

Daniel put both hands over his face.

“She spent it on clothes, trips, gifts for friends, private club fees. She’s been paying one credit card with another.”

I sat beside him.

“Did you know?”

“No.”

His voice cracked.

“I let her handle our finances because she said I was controlling whenever I asked questions.”

I understood something then.

Daniel had failed me tonight.

But that didn’t mean he wasn’t also living inside a deeply unhealthy marriage.

Both things could be true.

He looked at the loan application again.

“Why four million?”

“We don’t know.”

Daniel stood suddenly.

“I do.”

He pulled out his phone.

After scrolling through several emails, he found one.

“Six months ago, Vanessa wanted me to invest in a luxury wellness company her friend Amanda was starting.”

“Amanda?”

“The blonde woman who took your suite.”

Of course.

Daniel continued.

“I refused because they wanted three million dollars to launch. Vanessa said she’d find another investor.”

Richard frowned.

“Three million doesn’t explain four.”

Daniel looked sick.

“The other million probably covered our debts.”

Everything began fitting together.

Vanessa hadn’t simply given Amanda my suite.

She was trying to impress a future business partner.

She had used the vacation as theater.

My resort.

My rooms.

My money.

My reputation.

All to create the illusion that she controlled wealth she didn’t own.

Marcus checked his phone.

“We found another security clip.”

He displayed footage from the resort café earlier that afternoon.

Vanessa sat with Amanda.

The audio wasn’t recorded, but Amanda slid a folder across the table.

Vanessa signed something.

Then both women shook hands.

Daniel whispered, “Investment documents.”

“Maybe.”

I stood.

“Where is Amanda now?”

Richard checked.

“She’s packing.”

“Ask her to meet us downstairs before leaving.”

Twenty minutes later, Amanda entered the conference room looking furious.

Then she noticed Daniel.

Then me.

Then Marcus.

Her confidence disappeared.

“What is this?”

I placed the loan application on the table.

“Did Vanessa promise to invest in your company?”

Amanda’s lips parted.

Daniel spoke.

“Tell us the truth.”

Amanda looked toward the door.

Marcus didn’t block it.

She could leave anytime.

Instead, she sat down.

“She said Daniel was receiving control of the family resort company.”

Daniel looked devastated.

“When?”

“Soon.”

“How soon?”

Amanda swallowed.

“She said Margaret was signing everything this weekend.”

My blood went cold.

This weekend.

The vacation.

The resort.

The forged paperwork.

It had all been planned.

“Did she say how?”

Amanda shook her head quickly.

“No.”

Then she hesitated.

“There was supposed to be a family dinner tomorrow.”

Daniel looked at me.

I remembered.

Vanessa had insisted we attend a private dinner on the terrace.

She claimed she had planned something special.

Amanda continued.

“She said after dinner, the investment would be official.”

I leaned back.

Vanessa had intended to present those documents to me.

Probably mixed inside harmless vacation paperwork.

Maybe accompanied by champagne.

Maybe with Daniel unknowingly beside me.

The humiliation over the suite suddenly looked different.

It had been a test.

She wanted to see how much disrespect I would tolerate.

I smiled slightly.

Amanda looked nervous.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

I stood.

“But tomorrow night’s dinner is still happening.”

Daniel stared at me.

“Mom, why?”

“Because Vanessa thinks her plan failed.”

May you like

I picked up the forged documents.

“I’d like to know who else is involved before she realizes how much we know.”
