Chapter 3 - The Secret in the Desk

The silence that followed was suffocating. Dad looked around the room, desperately searching for an ally among his brothers and cousins, but all he found were disgusted, bewildered stares. His brother, Uncle Rick, shook his head in pure disbelief. ""Richard... she was working at NASA all summer, and you thought she was cutting grass?""

""She lied to us!"" Dad stammered, his neck flushing a violent crimson. ""She deceived her own parents! Living under my roof, eating my food, keeping secrets!""

""Did you want the truth, Dad?"" I challenged, stepping right up to the foot of the table. ""The night after Mom burned those papers, I came down to ask if I could at least take the bus to an engineering tour in Birmingham. You were sitting on the couch reviewing Trevor's new highlight tape. You didn't even look at me. You threw a twenty-dollar bill on the carpet and told me to buy myself some fast food and stop bothering you with trivial nonsense.""

Trevor kept his head buried in his hands, his broad shoulders shaking slightly. He wasn't defending Dad. He wasn't wearing the arrogant grin our father had spent five years polishing for him.

""Mrs. Patterson knew,"" I continued. ""Our seventy-four-year-old neighbor showed me more parental care than either of you did. When I showed her my acceptance letter into the Marshall junior cohort, she cried. She handed me the keys to her Civic and told me that as long as she was breathing, no brilliant young woman in her neighborhood was going to be held back by small-minded men.""

Mom took a tentative step forward, her apron wrinkled, tears streaking her mascara. ""Rosella... baby, we only wanted what was best for the family unit. We thought Trevor had a legitimate shot at the NFL! You know how hard it is to get noticed in sports! You've always been so self-reliant, so smart... we knew you would land on your feet!""

""You didn't know I would land on my feet, Mom,"" I said, my voice dropping to a harsh, cold whisper. ""You just didn't care if I fell. You told me I was 'practical' so you wouldn't feel guilty about stripping away my college fund to buy Trevor custom titanium cleats and private film analysis. You gambled everything on a lottery ticket while throwing away the daughter who had already built her own ladder.""

Mrs. Henderson, who had sat silently across the table, finally stood up. Her voice was trembling with the righteous authority of an educator who had watched too many talented girls get sidelined.

""Richard, Brenda, shame on both of you,"" Mrs. Henderson said, glaring at my parents with icy contempt. ""Rosella came to my office last March in tears because she thought she wouldn't even be able to afford the application fees. Do you have any idea how brilliant this girl is? Her guidance file is the highest-ranked academic portfolio this district has seen in twelve years! When she told me her parents refused to sign her FAFSA papers because it might interfere with her brother's athletic recruiting narrative, I nearly called child protective services for educational neglect!""

""Now hold on just a damn second, Clara!"" Dad bellowed, his voice cracking under the mounting humiliation. ""You have no right to speak on my family affairs! Trevor is an elite athlete! He's going Division One! When he signs his national letter of intent, all of this sacrifice is going to be paid back ten times over! We made an investment!""

""Did you, Richard?""

The voice that cut through Dad’s bluster didn't belong to me. It didn't belong to Mrs. Henderson or Uncle Joe.

It came from Trevor.

My brother slowly lifted his head. The number twelve jersey he was wearing suddenly looked two sizes too big for him. His eyes were bloodshot, his face hollowed out with a brand of misery that had been festering for months.

""Shut up, Dad,"" Trevor said quietly. ""Just please... shut up.""
