Chapter 10 - The Toast at the Table

Two years later, the grand ballroom of the Officers' Club at Fort Myer, Virginia, was illuminated by warm candlelight and the soft murmur of eighty close friends and family members.

It was Olivia and Lucas's wedding reception.

There were no stuffy protocol officers, no condescending socialites, and no empty displays of unearned wealth. The room was filled with the people who truly mattered: Lucas's hardworking parents from Ohio, his fellow veteran brothers-in-arms, my trusted staff officers who had become like extended family, and the lifelong friends who had supported Olivia and me through every deployment and every trial.

I stood at the edge of the dance floor, wearing a shimmering emerald gown that Olivia had chosen for me. For the first time in years, my uniform was safely hung in my cedar closet. Tonight, I was simply Victoria: mother of the bride.

The music slowed, and the master of ceremonies tapped his microphone.

""Ladies and gentlemen, please raise your glasses. It is time for the mother of the bride to offer the evening toast.""

A warm round of applause filled the ballroom as I walked to the center of the floor, holding a glass of sparkling cider.

I looked at Olivia, radiant in her lace wedding gown, her hand securely intertwined with Lucas's. Beside them, Lucas's father, a retired high school history teacher, smiled warmly at me, raising his own glass in silent camaraderie.

""When Olivia was a little girl,"" I began, my voice echoing gently across the quiet room, ""her father passed away while serving this nation. I found myself facing the greatest, most terrifying mission of my life: raising a daughter alone.""

Olivia's eyes glistened with tears, a soft, loving smile on her lips.

""In this world, there are people who believe that a single mother is incomplete. There are people who look at a family built without privilege and assume it is fragile. They think that strength is measured by the volume of your voice, the size of your estate, or the titles you hoard to make yourself feel important.""

Lucas squeezed Olivia's hand, nodding slowly in agreement.

""But real strength is quiet,"" I continued. ""Real strength is waking up before dawn to pack school lunches before putting on combat boots. Real strength is teaching your child that her dignity is non-negotiable, and that love is never found in someone who demands that you shrink so they can feel tall.""

I turned directly toward Lucas.

""Lucas, when you came into Olivia's life, you didn't ask her to prove herself. You didn't expect her to bow to your expectations. You honored her, you protected her peace, and you loved her for the extraordinary, resilient woman she is. As her mother, and as a soldier who knows the true meaning of loyalty, there is no greater gift you could ever give me.""

Lucas smiled, his eyes shining with emotion, and mouthed, Thank you, Mom.

""So tonight,"" I said, lifting my glass high toward the chandeliers, ""I want to propose a toast. To the families built not on arrogance, but on sacrifice. To the daughters who know their worth, and the men who are strong enough to stand beside them as equals. And to the simple truth that no matter how dark the storm, integrity and love will always, always win.""

""Hear, hear!"" the room shouted in unison.

Glasses clinked throughout the hall, a chorus of laughter, cheers, and warm celebration filling the air.

As the orchestra struck up a joyous swing rhythm, Lucas led Olivia onto the dance floor, spinning her beneath the warm golden lights. She laughed, her white veil trailing behind her like a banner of pure, unblemished happiness.

I stepped back to my table, watching them dance.

Colonel Vance, sitting nearby in his formal civilian tuxedo with his wife, leaned over and refilled my glass with fresh cider.

""Everything running according to plan, General?"" he asked with a gentle wink.

I watched my daughter laugh in her husband's arms, surrounded by love, respect, and peace.

""Better than planned, Marcus,"" I replied, smiling with all the warmth in my heart. ""Much better than planned."""
