Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

The next two hours on Hawthorne Lane felt like an open-air public trial. In a tight-knit suburban neighborhood where the loudest weekend event was a lawnmower running past eight on a Sunday morning, three sheriff's cruisers with flashing amber lights were the equivalent of a carnival midway. By 4:30 a.m., curtains were twitching in every house across the street. Mrs. Higgins from number fourteen was out on her front lawn pretending to walk her miniature poodle, while Walter Pike stood near the mailbox like an official town crier, whispering dramatic updates to anyone within earshot. Inside the house, the atmosphere was suffocating. Deputy Harris escorted a stumbling, half-sober Mason Hensley out to a cruiser in handcuffs after finding an unregistered handgun tucked into his glovebox out on Elm Street. Luke Brennan was made to sit on our dining chair, shivering in his sweatpants while Deputy Ramos checked his identification against active county records. “Mr. Brennan,” Captain Miller said, writing in his small leather notepad. “You have an active restraining order from an ex-girlfriend in the neighboring county regarding stalking behavior, and you’re currently on probation for a misdemeanor assault charge in Denver from two years back. Being found intoxicated inside another man’s home at three in the morning while on probation isn't a great look.” Luke sat with his jaw clenched, staring murderously at the floor. The polished, charismatic gym enthusiast was completely gone, replaced by a sullen, petty criminal whose arrogance had run out of road. Rachel sat at the opposite end of the kitchen table, wrapped in a winter coat she had thrown over her robe, weeping uncontrollably. Every few minutes, she would look up at me, searching my eyes for any flicker of the forgiving, gentle husband who had spent eight years smoothing over her anxieties and accommodating her every mood. She found nothing. My gaze was a brick wall. “Ben, please let the deputies go,” she sobbed, her makeup smeared across her cheeks in dark tracks. “We can talk about this. Just you and me. We’ll go to marriage counseling. I’ll quit the gym today. I’ll never speak to Luke again. Please, don't let them take him away in front of the neighbors. My job... Dr. Vance’s wife is on the county board. If this gets out, I’ll be ruined!” “You should have thought about Dr. Vance’s wife four months ago at the Hampton Inn off the interstate,” I said, setting my laptop down on the center of the table. Rachel froze, her breath catching in her throat. The color drained from her face again, turning a translucent, ghostly white. “What... what did you say?” she whispered. I turned the laptop screen toward her. On it was an open spreadsheet listing every date, transaction amount, and GPS coordinate my cloud script had extracted from her phone backup during our drive home. Side by side were screenshots of her text messages with Luke, including the one sent three weeks earlier where she explicitly discussed transferring forty thousand dollars from our joint savings into a private shell company before serving me with divorce papers. Captain Miller glanced over my shoulder at the screen, letting out a low, disapproving whistle. “Well now,” Miller muttered. “That looks an awful lot like premeditated wire fraud and grand larceny conspiracy. Deputy Ramos, let’s go ahead and put Mr. Brennan in the second cruiser. We’ll let the magistrate sort through the property and trespass complaints downtown.” Luke didn't say a word as Ramos grabbed his arm and hauled him up from the chair. As he passed me in the hallway, he shot me a glare filled with pure, impotent rage. “You think you’re smart, Ben?” Luke hissed under his breath. “She never loved you. She spent eight years settling for you because you were safe and boring.” “Maybe,” I replied, looking him up and down without a trace of anger. “But I’m sleeping in my own bed tonight. You’re sleeping in a holding cell on a probation violation. Enjoy breakfast on the county’s dime, Luke.”
