Chapter 5 - Caught Red-Handed

For ten full seconds, nobody moved. The hum of the outdoor LEDs against the siding was the only sound in the house, save for the pathetic coughing of Mason down in the living room as he tried to figure out why his face was wet with whiskey. Luke Brennan tried to pull himself together. He rolled his shoulders back, puffing out his chest to reassert the physical intimidation that had served him so well through college athletics and gym locker rooms. But his bare feet shifted uncomfortably on the hardwood floor, and his hands twitched at his sides. “Look, man,” Luke started, his voice dropping into a patronizing, defensive drawl. “You’ve got this completely wrong. Don't go doing something crazy. Mason and I were out having drinks down at the tavern, Mason got way too hammered to drive, and Rachel was nice enough to let us crash on the couches so nobody got a DUI. We just came upstairs to find extra blankets.” It was an insultingly lazy lie, delivered with the smug entitlement of a man who believed other men were fundamentally stupid. I didn't raise my voice. I didn't lunge forward with clenched fists. I simply looked at him, letting the heavy silence hang between us until his fake smile began to twitch around the corners. “Extra blankets,” I repeated evenly. “In your sweatpants. In my bedroom. While your phone is resting on my nightstand next to my wife’s jewelry box.” Luke’s jaw tightened. He glanced back toward the bedroom, realizing his mistake. “Ben, please!” Rachel pleaded, stepping between us, tears finally spilling down her cheeks in a frantic, practiced stream. She reached out to touch my arm, but I stepped back half an inch, leaving her fingers grasping at empty air. The rejection seemed to hit her harder than a slap. “It isn't what it looks like! Luke was just talking to me! We were talking about his mom’s recovery, and I was giving him advice, and then... then he tried to kiss me, Ben! I swear on my mother’s life, I was pushing him away! I was telling him to leave when you turned the lights on!” Behind her, Luke’s eyes flashed with venomous disbelief. The loyalty between co-conspirators is remarkably fragile when the lights come on. “Excuse me?” Luke snapped, turning on her with a vicious snarl. “Pushing me away? You called me at midnight, Rachel! You told me Ben was safely out on the water playing boy scout and that your bed was finally free! Don't you dare put this on me!” “Shut up, Luke!” she screamed, her voice cracking into hysterics. “Shut your mouth! You’re lying! You took advantage of me!” “I took advantage of you?” Luke scoffed, pointing an aggressive finger at her face. “Who unlocked the front door? Who disabled the doorbell notifications? Who sent me three hotel room numbers over the last month?” I watched them tear each other apart with the cold detachment of a spectator watching wild dogs fight over scraps in an alley. There was no pain left in my chest; the shock had metabolized into pure, crystal-clear strategic resolve. “You two can coordinate your testimonies later,” I said calmly, pulling my phone from my pocket and tapping the screen twice. Down in the driveway, the muffled thump of car doors closing echoed through the open front door. Heavy footsteps mounted the porch. “What was that?” Luke asked, suddenly looking around like a cornered animal. “That would be Captain Miller and two deputies from the county sheriff's department,” I said smoothly. “Along with Walter Pike, who is currently handing them a digital storage drive containing four angles of your arrival, Mason’s open container violation in my driveway, and my formal complaint for criminal trespass.” Rachel’s eyes widened in sheer horror. “Criminal trespass? Ben, I live here! I invited them in!” “You did,” I agreed, looking her dead in the eyes. “But you don't own the property, Rachel. The mortgage and the deed are held solely under my family’s pre-marital trust, which you signed off on before we married. Furthermore, Luke Brennan was formally served with a neighborhood trespass notice by the HOA last year after an altercation at the community pool. And Mason down there? He just vomited all over a five-thousand-dollar imported rug while in possession of an open bottle of liquor inside a private residence without the owner's consent.” Footsteps hit the second-floor landing. Two uniformed deputies stepped up behind me, their hands resting comfortably on their duty belts, followed by Captain Miller’s stern, weathered face. “Morning, folks,” Miller said, his sharp eyes taking in Luke’s bare chest, Rachel’s disheveled robe, and the shattered glass downstairs. “Looks like we’ve got quite a domestic situation to sort out before breakfast.”
