Chapter 2 - The Miami Receipt

The silence in the grand ballroom was so heavy you could hear the ventilation hum through the decorative ceiling grates.

Maya looked as though she had been struck by lightning.

Her hands dropped from her face, her mouth opening in soundless horror.

"Lauren, how could you?" Maya whispered, her voice barely audible over the murmur rising from the crowd.

Mark stood between the tables, his fists clutched at his sides like lead weights.

"Get your coat, Lauren," Mark said through clenched teeth. "We are leaving this building right now."

"I’m not going anywhere, Mark!" Lauren shot back, turning her back on her husband. "Daniel wants the truth? Let's give everyone the whole truth!"

I stepped in front of Maya, shielding her from the phone cameras that were still flashing across the room.

My chest felt hollow, like an empty drum being beaten from the inside.

"You have five seconds to explain what you're talking about, Lauren, before I hand this transfer record to the federal fraud division," I warned, keeping my voice level and hard.

Lauren pulled an embossed black leather wallet from her clutch and extracted a folded, laminated slip of paper.

She held it up between two fingers like an auctioneer displaying a trophy.

"A hotel receipt from the St. Regis Bal Harbour," Lauren declared, turning the paper toward the crowd. "June 14th, five years ago. Two nights before you walked down the aisle, Daniel."

She paused, letting the collective gasp ripple through the guests.

"The room was registered under Julian’s corporate card. And the breakfast order on the final morning was billed for two."

Maya lunged forward, her hands clawing for the paper, but I held her back by the elbow.

"That's a lie!" Maya screamed, her composure completely shattering into ragged hysterics. "You know that's a lie, Lauren! Julian was in rehab in Delray Beach! You asked me to fly down there to pay his clinic deposit because your credit was frozen!"

"Is that the story you told yourself to sleep at night, Maya?" Lauren mocked. "You spent seventy-two hours in that penthouse with my brother while Daniel was sitting in Chicago waiting for your dress rehearsal!"

Guests in the front row began whispering furiously behind their cocktail napkins.

A few of Lauren’s corporate partners quietly slid out of their seats and began heading for the exits, unwilling to be caught in the blast radius of a public scandal.

"Show me the receipt," I said, holding out my hand.

Lauren handed it to me with a smug, victorious tilt of her chin.

She thought she had dropped a bomb that would destroy our marriage on the spot and turn me against Maya, distracting everyone from the one point four million dollars she had stolen.

I looked down at the receipt.

It was indeed from the St. Regis, dated five years ago.

The name on the booking was Julian Hayes.

The room number was 1402.

And attached to the back of the bill was a credit card charge slip showing the last four digits of the payment method.

I stared at those four digits for three long seconds.

Then a strange, cold laugh tore from my throat.

The tension in the room snapped as everyone turned back to look at me, bewildered by my reaction.

Lauren frowned, her triumphant smirk flickering with uncertainty.

"What's so funny, Daniel?" she demanded. "Finding out your wife spent your wedding week with another man?"

"These four digits," I said, pointing my finger at the paper. "Whose card is this, Lauren?"

"It was Julian’s card!" she snapped.

"No, it wasn't," I said, looking up from the paper to lock eyes with her. "This card belonged to my father's corporate foundation. The account was closed three months before he passed away."

May you like

Lauren’s eyes widened with immediate, paralyzing dread.

"Which means," I continued, stepping down from the stage until I was standing inches from her face, "you stole my father's corporate identity five years ago to pay for your brother's luxury vacation. And you've been blackmailing my wife with your own crime ever since."
