Chapter 2 - The Cracking Foundation

Morning light spilled through the kitchen blinds, painting sharp white stripes across the counter. Owen was eating oatmeal, swinging his small legs against the barstool, while Claire scrolled through her phone with a heavy frown.
""Did Mom come home last night, Dad?"" Claire asked, her fourteen-year-old voice cracking with adolescent suspicion.
""She had late meetings, honey,"" I answered, keeping my tone completely neutral as I buttered toast and packed two brown paper bags with fresh fruit, sliced turkey sandwiches, and personalized sticky notes. ""She’s working hard on the supermarket expansion.""
""She’s always working,"" Owen mumbled, tracing a circle in his cinnamon porridge. ""Ethan is always in her photos on Instagram. The other kids at school asked if Ethan was my dad because they saw the local newspaper article.""
My hands paused above the lunchbox. The sting was sharp, but I masked it instantly with a gentle smile. ""I'm your dad, buddy. Nobody else. Now finish up, or we're going to miss the first bell.""
After dropping the kids at school, I returned to the empty house. At ten in the morning, the front door clicked open. Marissa walked in, still wearing her designer navy dress, though her makeup was smudged and her hair was tied in a messy, careless knot. She reeked faintly of expensive wine and cedarwood cologne.
She kicked off her high heels in the entryway, leaving them sprawled across the floor I had swept just an hour earlier.
""There's coffee in the pot,"" I said from the dining table, where my laptop sat open.
""I don't want coffee,"" she snapped, dropping her designer leather tote onto the dining room table, scattering a stack of my bills. ""I need an aspirin. Ethan and I were up until four in the morning at his penthouse finalizing the Northeast distribution pitch for Apex Grocers. We’re securing a three-million-dollar purchase order next month, Daniel. Do you understand what that means? We are going national.""
""Congratulations,"" I said evenly. ""Did you sign the vendor contract yet?""
""The preliminary letters of intent are done. The formal audit of our processing facility happens in two weeks. If our cold-chain storage and safety inspection passes without a single infraction, the contract becomes fully binding."" She rubbed her temples, glancing down at me with an expression bordering on pity. ""Ethan says we're going to be featured in Forbes Next 100. He thinks I should consider getting a private apartment in downtown Charlotte. It’s bad for my brand image to commute forty minutes every day from a sleepy suburban cul-de-sac.""
I leaned back in my wooden chair. ""And what about Owen and Claire? What about our marriage?""
Marissa sighed loudly, as if I were a child asking why the sky was blue. ""Daniel, look at us. Be honest for once in your life. We outgrew each other the day I stepped into the corporate world and you stayed behind in an apron. You don't have ambition. You don't have drive. You're comfortable living off the grocery budget I provide, driving carpools, and puttering around the yard. Ethan challenges me. He moves at my speed.""
""I gave you every dollar I saved from twelve years of crawling through industrial ventilation shafts, Marissa,"" I reminded her, keeping my voice dangerously calm. ""I gave up my promotion, my career, and my independence so you could build this company without paying for outside daycare or taking predatory loans.""
""And I paid you back by giving you a roof over your head and a comfortable life where you don't have to lift a finger for real work!"" she shouted, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. ""If you want respect, go earn something of your own. But don't you dare act like a martyr because you cook meals and pick up your own children.""
Her phone buzzed violently on the marble counter. The screen lit up with a preview message from Ethan: The boutique hotel downtown is booked for next weekend's convention. Just the two of us this time, partner. Can't wait.
Marissa snatched the phone off the table with lightning speed, her face flushing crimson. She glared at me, daring me to challenge her.
""Pack your bags for the weekend if you want,"" I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion. ""I won't stop you.""
""I don't need your permission, Daniel,"" she sneered, gathering her purse and heading toward the master bedroom. ""Ethan’s legal team is already reviewing our asset disclosures. When the Apex contract clears next month, I want an amicable separation. You can keep this house and an equitable cash settlement. But Field & Hearth is mine. Ethan and I built it, and you won't touch a single share of it.""
She slammed the bedroom door behind her.
I sat in the quiet dining room for a long minute, looking down at my computer screen. On the monitor was the official portal of the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Displayed prominently were Patent No. US-9842104-B2 and Patent No. US-10492811-B1: Sub-Zero Closed-Loop Dual Compression System for Perishable Liquids.

Marissa thought she had outgrown me. She thought she was discarding an uneducated domestic helper who couldn't survive without her handouts. She had forgotten that without the heart, the body cannot live. And without my thermal engineering, her entire organic empire was nothing more than spoiled soup.
