Chapter 5 - The Young Couple

Before Thomas could process the sight of his empty childhood home, the sound of an approaching vehicle caught their attention.

A modest blue minivan pulled into the driveway behind Thomas's crossover.

A young couple in their early thirties stepped out into the drizzle, carrying an armload of paint swatches, measuring tapes, and a toddler bundled in a yellow rain slicker.

"Excuse me!" Thomas barked, marching down the lawn toward the driveway with an arrogant, aggressive stride. "Who are you, and why are you parking in my mother's driveway?!"

The young man, wearing a warm flannel jacket and work boots, looked startled. He set his measuring tape on the hood of his van and held up a set of shiny brass keys.

"I'm David Miller," the young man replied politely. "And this is my wife, Sarah. We just came from the title company on High Street."

"What title company?!" Jenna stepped forward, her voice rising in shrill hostility. "This is private property! This house belongs to my mother-in-law, Dorothy Henderson!"

Sarah Miller pulled a fresh legal folder from her canvas bag, opening it to show a certified deed of sale stamped with the county recorder's official seal.

"Not anymore, ma'am," Sarah said gently, looking between Thomas and Jenna with quiet pity. "Mrs. Henderson closed the sale this morning at ten o'clock. We took official possession at noon."

Thomas felt the ground beneath his feet tilt violently.

The cold rain stung his cheeks, but an icy dread was spreading through his chest, freezing the breath in his lungs.

"Sold...?" Thomas wheezed, grabbing the corner of the young man’s van for support. "She... she sold my childhood home?!"

"One point eight two million, all cash," David Miller nodded. "Mrs. Henderson was wonderful to work with. She even left us a handwritten binder detailing every single flower species in the garden and the maintenance history of the furnace since 1994."

"You bought it?!" Jenna screamed, losing all composure, lunging toward Sarah Miller. "That house belongs to my husband! He is the sole heir! You can't just buy someone's inheritance!"

"Back off, lady!" David Miller stepped firmly in front of his wife and child, his friendly demeanor vanishing behind a protective glare. "Mrs. Henderson owned this property free and clear. The title was pristine. If you have an issue, call her lawyer, Martha Vance."

David turned to his wife. "Sarah, take the baby inside and test the front deadbolt. I'll call the sheriff if these people don't clear our driveway in two minutes."

Sarah unlocked the front door—the very door Thomas’s key couldn't open—and walked inside, carrying her child into the warm, empty house.

Thomas stood on the wet asphalt, staring at the closed door, his mind screaming in utter disbelief.

His mother had nearly two million dollars in cash, and she had vanished into thin air without leaving a forwarding address.
