Chapter 7 - A Sister’s Redemption

While the wreckage of Gerald’s pride lay scattered across the main ballroom, Clare, David, and I retreated to the private bridal suite in the back of the clubhouse. The heavy oak door shut out the hushed whispers and frantic phone calls of Gerald’s remaining associates. Clare collapsed onto the plush velvet sofa, kicking off her five-inch designer heels with an enormous sigh of release.

""I thought my heart was going to burst through my ribs,"" Clare laughed through fresh tears, wiping her mascara with a cotton cloth David handed her. ""Did you see his face, Evie? Did you see the way his eyes popped out when I read your title?""

""I think he aged twenty years in twenty seconds,"" David chuckled, loosening his bowtie and pouring three glasses of sparkling water from the mini-fridge. ""I’ve spent three years working at his firm, listening to him brag about how he controls every politician in the state. To see him cower before a two-star general was the greatest wedding gift anyone could have given us.""

I smiled, sitting down beside Clare and taking her hands in mine. ""You took a massive risk tonight, little bird. If this went wrong, he could have made your life very difficult.""

""He already made my life difficult, Evelyn,"" Clare said softly, her laughter fading into sincere gratitude. ""Ever since you left, the house felt like a mausoleum. He controlled everything. He dictated where I went to school, who my friends were, and what I was allowed to say. The only thing that kept me sane was knowing that you made it out. Every time I saw your name in the military dispatches or received one of your encrypted letters from deployment, I reminded myself that Ulette blood wasn't entirely rotten. You gave me the courage to stand up to him.""

""You did the hard part yourself,"" I told her, squeezing her fingers. ""Standing in front of two hundred people and defying the man who holds your entire financial life in his hands takes real guts. That was general-grade courage, Clare.""

A soft knock sounded at the door. David opened it cautiously, revealing Judge Vance and Chief Executive Reynolds standing in the hallway, holding their coats.

""General Ulette,"" Judge Vance said respectfully, stepping into the room with a warm, apologetic smile. ""We didn't mean to intrude on your family moment, but Frank and I wanted to offer our personal congratulations to the bride and groom before we took our leave.""

Clare stood up gracefully, accepting their warm handshakes.

""David,"" Frank Reynolds said, looking intently at Clare’s new husband. ""I heard what you said out there about resigning from Gerald's firm. While the Department of Justice is an honorable path, if you ever decide you want to stay in private practice here in the state, Reynolds Capital is looking for a general counsel who understands integrity. The position is yours if you want it.""

David looked stunned, then broke into a wide, grateful grin. ""Thank you, Mr. Reynolds. That means the world to both of us.""

""And General,"" Judge Vance added, turning to me with a solemn nod. ""I am hosting a gala for military veterans at the state capitol next month. We would be profoundly honored if you would be our keynote speaker. We need real leaders to show our young people what service and sacrifice truly look like.""

May you like

""I would be honored, Judge Vance,"" I replied, returning his firm handshake. ""As long as table twenty-two isn't next to the kitchen.""

The men laughed warmly, wished the young couple well, and departed into the evening, leaving behind an atmosphere that had transformed from bitter warfare into peaceful liberation.
