Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

""Marley, baby, please, go get in the car,"" Bethany commanded, her maternal instincts kicking in through her incandescent fury. She reached out, grabbed Cole by the arm, and pulled him toward the door. ""Both of you, get your backpacks and get in the SUV right now.""
""I have my things already,"" Cole mumbled, his face pale as a ghost as he grabbed his duffel from the foyer bench.
Marley didn't move immediately. She stood frozen in the middle of the room, staring at Derek with pure horror. ""I put that video on TikTok, Dad. It already has forty thousand views. Everyone at my school saw it. They think she’s an evil stepmother... and it was you. It was all you.""
""Take it down, Marley!"" Derek shouted, his temper finally snapping under the crushing weight of exposure. ""Delete the damn video and get your things! Don't you dare speak to me like that in my own house!""
""It's not your house!"" I said, stepping between Derek and the teenager.
The room went dead silent again.
Derek stared at me, his chest heaving. ""What did you just say?""
""I said, it's not your house,"" I repeated, my tone as cold and level as a surveyor's line. ""The deed to this property is held in my family trust, Derek. You didn't have the credit rating to qualify for the jumbo mortgage when we bought it seven months ago. My signature is on the title. My name is on the mortgage. You are a co-borrower on a junior lien that hasn't cleared escrow.""
Bethany let out a sharp, incredulous bark of laughter. ""Oh, Derek. You really haven't changed at all, have you? You find a woman with money and good credit, move into her life, and pretend you built the castle.""
She grabbed Marley’s hand and pulled her toward the door. ""We're leaving. And Derek? You can expect an emergency motion for sole legal and physical custody filed by Tuesday morning. The video your daughter posted will be exhibit A, showing parental alienation and emotional abuse. And these bank statements will be exhibit B. Let’s see what the judge thinks of your child support reduction requests when he sees thirty-four thousand dollars going to your mistress.""
""Bethany, don't do this!"" Derek chased her toward the front steps, pleading desperately. ""Think about the kids! We can work this out!""
""Don't touch my car, Derek,"" Bethany warned, slamming the front door in his face.
The heavy thud of the door closing reverberated through the quiet house. Through the side window, I saw Cole climb into the backseat of the SUV. Marley lingered on the walkway for three seconds, looking back at the house, her face streaked with tears, before Bethany pushed her inside and reversed out of the driveway, tires crunching furiously over the gravel.
Derek stood on the welcome mat, his hands clenched into white-knuckled fists. Slowly, he turned around to face me.
The veneer of the charming, handsome husband was entirely gone. His eyes were bloodshot, his jaw set in a vicious sneer. ""You think you're smart, don't you, Eliza? You think because you balance spreadsheets for tugboats that you can run my life?""
""I don't want to run your life, Derek,"" I said, walking over to the dining table and picking up my phone. ""I want you out of mine.""
""This is my residence!"" he snarled, stepping into the room with his chest puffed out, closing the distance between us. ""You can't just kick me out on Christmas Day! California tenant laws require a thirty-day written notice to vacate! Try calling the police. They'll tell you it's a civil dispute and leave me right here on the couch.""
I looked at him with genuine pity. He really believed his half-baked legal knowledge from internet forums was going to protect him.
""You're right about California tenant law, Derek,"" I replied calmly, tapping my phone screen. ""Under normal circumstances, an unlisted resident requires thirty days. But you didn't just stay here. You committed wire fraud.""
Derek scoffed, but his eyes darted toward the manila folder. ""Wire fraud? Don't be ridiculous. Those were joint funds. A husband can move money between marital accounts.""
May you like
""Not when the high-yield account was legally designated as non-commingled separate property in the prenuptial agreement you signed in May,"" I said.
Derek’s smirk vanished so violently it looked like someone had slapped him across the face.
