Chapter 7 - The Master Lease

Daniel buried his face in his hands, trembling. The reality of what he had thrown away was crashing down on him like an avalanche.
If he had simply shown me basic kindness, if he had defended me to his wife, if he had treated me like a mother instead of a live-in servant, our entire family would have been set for generations. The trust fund, the paid mortgages, the vacations, the generational security—it had all been sitting right there in his guest bedroom, ready to be bestowed. And he had traded it all for a ""wellness studio.""
Slowly, Daniel lifted his head. His eyes were red, desperate, and calculating. He glanced at the binder on Vance’s desk.
“Willow Creek,” he whispered hoarsely. “You bought Willow Creek Lane.”
“I did,” I replied. “Cash. Harold always wanted a house with a wide porch and shade trees. I bought it in his honor. I slept there last night. It was the most peaceful sleep I’ve had since Harold passed away.”
Daniel reached across the table, his hands shaking violently. “Mom... please. We’ve been desperate for that house for a year. You have five bedrooms all to yourself! Sell it to us. Or lease it to us! Like we planned. We can all move in together! We can start over. Renee will apologize! I swear to God, Renee will get down on her knees and beg for your forgiveness! We can be a real family again!”
I looked at him with profound sorrow. Not anger—pity.
“You still don't understand, do you, Daniel?” I said softly. “You don't want me. You want Willow Creek. You want the prestige. You want the square footage. You want the wealth.”
Arthur Vance cleared his throat, pulling a single-page document from the folder and sliding it in front of Daniel.
“Mr. Briggs,” Arthur said briskly. “As the representative of H.B. Heritage Capital Group, I have prepared a response to your lease proposal.”
Daniel snatched the paper, his eyes frantically scanning the lines.
Lease Application Status: DENIED.
Notice to Vacate / Non-Affiliation Clause: Effective Immediately.
“Denied?” Daniel breathed, looking up at me in horror. “Mom, no! Don’t do this to me! My partners know I was meeting with Vance today. I told everyone at the firm I was locking down Willow Creek! If I walk out of here empty-handed, I’ll be ruined! My reputation—”
“Your reputation is your own responsibility,” I interrupted. “You wanted me out of your house, Daniel. You got exactly what you asked for. But you will never step foot inside mine.”
“What about Toby and Maya?” Daniel cried, grasping for any leverage he had left. “Are you going to punish your own grandchildren because you’re mad at me and Renee?”
“Toby and Maya have fully funded, irrevocable educational trusts established under Vance, Sterling & Cole,” I stated firmly. “Their college tuition, graduate school, and healthcare are guaranteed until they turn twenty-five. But neither you nor Renee will ever have administrative access to a single penny of that money. You will not touch it, you will not borrow against it, and you will not use it to fund your country club lifestyles.”

Daniel slumped back, staring at me as if looking at a stranger. “Who are you?” he whispered.
“I am your mother,” I said, standing up from the conference table. “The woman you thought was only good for folding laundry.”
