Chapter 4 - Stripping the Silver Spoon

The next morning, the sun rose over a valley that had changed forever. Kenneth Harrison arrived at eight in the morning, accompanied by two armed private security guards and a forensic accountant named David Wright.
Kevin was asleep on the porch swing, shivering under a rough wool blanket Rosa had tossed to him out of basic human pity. Kenneth tapped the young man's foot with his briefcase.
""Wake up, Kevin. We have a lot of paperwork to get through before your interview with the United States Attorney.""
Kevin sat up groggily, rubbing his bruised eyes. ""Kenneth... please tell me my mom didn't cut me out.""
Kenneth opened his briefcase without a word, pulling out three distinct legal bindings. ""Under the terms of the Vance Family Revocable Living Trust, Section 4, Paragraph B: Any beneficiary who participates, directly or indirectly, in actions that jeopardize the financial integrity, operational licensing, or legal ownership of the core agricultural estate immediately forfeits all rights, distributions, and future claims.""
""No,"" Kevin gasped. ""That was for if I got sued! Not for this!""
""You signed an illegal indemnity clause pledging future harvests as collateral for unverified private loans,"" Kenneth stated coldly. ""That is a direct violation of the trust charter. Furthermore, your mother has formally revoked your executive vice president title at Vance Crest Vineyards. Your company car has been repossessed—the keys are already on my desk. Your corporate credit cards were canceled at dawn. And your luxury loft in downtown Napa, which is owned by the estate's holding company, has had its locks changed.""
Kevin stared at the papers, his chest heaving. ""You're kicking me out onto the street? Mom, I'm your son! Your only child!""
I stepped out onto the porch, dressed in my working boots, denim jacket, and leather work gloves. ""You are my son, Kevin. But you are thirty-two years old. For ten years, I gave you a corner office, a six-figure salary, and unlimited expense accounts while you pretended to manage our national marketing. You spent your days at wine tastings and golf courses while Rosa and I worked twelve hours a day in the bottling plant.""
""I worked!"" he protested.
""You took credit for our awards,"" I corrected him. ""And the moment a woman waved high society in your face, you threw your mother away like common trash. You wanted to live like an East Coast aristocrat? Go live like one. Go see if Kayla’s wealthy family will take you in. Go see if Henderson’s country club friends will pay your legal fees.""
""They won't even take my calls,"" Kevin choked out. ""Her father told the press this morning that Kayla was manipulated by a rogue criminal element and that their family has no connection to me.""
""Naturally,"" I said. ""Rats abandon a sinking ship. Now, Kenneth will drive you to the federal building in Sacramento. You will tell them everything you know about Henderson’s illegal loan sharking and wire fraud. If you lie to them to protect yourself, you will go to prison for ten years. If you tell the truth, Kenneth has negotiated a conditional immunity agreement based on your cooperation.""

""And after that?"" Kevin whispered, tears streaming down his grimy cheeks. ""Where do I go?""
""That is entirely up to you,"" I said, turning my back on him and walking down the porch steps toward the tractor waiting in the drive. ""The earth doesn't lie, Kevin. You reap exactly what you sow. And right now, your fields are completely barren.""
