Chapter 8 - The Aftermath in Daylight

The morning sun rose over the private island with breathtaking, golden brilliance. The tropical rain from the previous night had washed away the stale wine stains on the limestone terrace, leaving the air crisp, clean, and filled with the scent of wild jasmine and salt water.
Sophie sat on the private balcony of the master estate villa, wearing her favorite oversized yellow pajama shirt, swinging her bare feet over the wooden lounge chair. A tray of fresh tropical fruit, warm croissants, and hot chocolate sat on the glass table beside her. The red welt on her cheek had faded into a faint pink mark, treated with soothing aloe vera by the island’s private medical doctor who had visited our suite late the night before.
""Mommy?"" Sophie asked, biting into a strawberry. ""Are we going to see Aunt Victoria today?""
I walked out onto the balcony, holding a steaming mug of black coffee, and sat down in the chair beside her. I reached over, gently tucking a stray strand of brown hair behind her ear.
""No, sweetie,"" I said, giving her a warm, reassuring smile. ""We’re not going to see Aunt Victoria today. In fact, we’re not going to see Aunt Victoria, Grandma, or Grandpa for a very long time.""
Sophie chewed quietly for a moment, looking out across the turquoise horizon where the gentle waves broke against the white coral reefs. ""Are you sad?""
""Not even a little bit,"" I said honestly. ""How about you? Does your cheek still hurt?""
Sophie touched her face lightly with her small fingers, then shook her head. ""A little bit when I smile real big. But I’m not scared anymore. You caught me, Mommy. You didn't let me fall.""
My throat tightened with a sudden surge of raw, pure emotion. I pulled her into my lap, burying my face in her soft hair, holding her with all the love and strength I possessed. ""I will never let you fall, Sophie. Never. No matter who tries to push you.""
A quiet knock sounded at the double doors of the villa. Marcus, the resort general manager, stepped onto the terrace holding a slim leather folder.
""Good morning, Ms. Vance,"" Marcus said politely. ""I wanted to inform you that the island ferry departed promptly at eight o'clock. All seventy-six outside guests boarded safely. They were exceptionally complimentary regarding your hospitality and the charter arrangements to Miami.""
""And the four individuals at the harbor depot?"" I asked.
Marcus allowed himself a faint, professional smirk. ""They were boarded onto the early morning supply barge at six-thirty. They arrived at the public mainland docks two hours ago. I understand there were several local process servers and financial reporters waiting near the marina for Mr. Miller upon his arrival.""
I nodded slowly, taking a sip of my coffee. I had released the full legal documentation regarding Logan’s default and corporate restructuring to my legal firm at midnight. By noon, the financial news networks would be covering the collapse of his venture firm, exposing his fraudulent fundraising schemes to the entire business community. His assets would be frozen, his penthouse repossessed, and his social status permanently erased.
As for my parents and Victoria, the illusion was shattered forever. The elite country clubs they frequented would close their doors to them; the high-society friends who had watched Victoria assault a child would erase her from their guest lists. Without Logan’s imaginary fortune and without my quiet financial subsidies, my parents would be forced to sell their oversized suburban home to settle their accumulating debts.
They had spent decades chasing status at the expense of love, and now, they were left with neither.
""Ms. Vance,"" Marcus added gently. ""You have the island booked exclusively for the next two days. Would you like us to prepare the yacht for an afternoon cruise around the outer reef?""
I looked down at Sophie, who was looking up at me with wide, hopeful eyes, her face lighting up with pure, unburdened excitement.
""What do you think, Sophie?"" I asked. ""Do you want to go look for sea turtles?""
May you like
""Yes! Can we swim with them, Mommy?""
""We can do whatever we want,"" I smiled, looking up at Marcus. ""Have the yacht ready at one o’clock, Marcus. We’re staying for the whole weekend.""
