Chapter 7 - The Eviction at Midnight

The clock on the main pavilion tower struck eleven at night. The heavy chime reverberated across the dark, silent estate. The humid ocean breeze had picked up, carrying the distant rumble of an approaching tropical rain squall.

The private island's chief security officer, a towering man named David dressed in a crisp black uniform, walked out onto the terrace followed by four armed guards. The guests fell silent, parting quickly to give the security detail a wide berth. David walked straight toward me, dipping his head in a respectful nod.

""Ms. Vance,"" David said, his voice deep and authoritative. ""The general manager informed us of the contract termination. How would you like us to proceed regarding estate access?""

I glanced at the eighty guests standing in awkward clusters around the terrace. Most of them were completely innocent bystanders—distant friends, business acquaintances, and colleagues who had flown across the country expecting a celebration, only to be dragged into an ugly family war.

""The external guests may remain in their oceanfront villas for the night,"" I instructed David, speaking loudly enough for the surrounding crowd to hear. ""The island ferry will transport them back to the mainland international airport at eight o’clock tomorrow morning, with first-class arrangements provided courtesy of my firm. They did not strike my daughter. They will be treated with professional hospitality.""

A visible wave of relief washed over the crowd. Several guests immediately offered polite nods of gratitude before quickly gathering their belongings and dispersing toward the guest pathways, eager to distance themselves from the nuclear fallout of the Vance family.

""However,"" I continued, pointing a steady finger toward Victoria, Logan, Eleanor, and Richard. ""Those four individuals are trespassing on private property under Section 8 of the commercial contract. Their villa reservations have been canceled effective immediately.""

Victoria gasped, scrambling to her feet, her hands clutching Eleanor’s silk jacket. ""You can't kick us out! It's the middle of the night! There are no commercial flights off this island until tomorrow!""

""That is correct,"" I said, cold satisfaction settling into my bones. ""Which means you will be spending the night at the island’s southern harbor depot.""

""The maintenance harbor?!"" Eleanor screeched, clutching her chest as if she were having a heart attack. ""That’s where they keep the diesel generators and the waste disposal boats! There are no luxury rooms there! It’s a metal storage warehouse!""

""It has a roof, running water, and folding cots,"" I replied without an ounce of warmth. ""It is significantly more comfortable than the concrete ledge my eight-year-old daughter nearly landed on when Victoria threw her.""

""Isabel, please!"" Logan begged, taking a step toward me, tears finally spilling down his cheeks. ""I have nowhere to go. My investors are going to destroy me. If you evict me from the property tonight, the press will know everything by sunrise!""

""You should have thought about the press before you let your fiancée assault my child,"" I said. ""David, please escort Mr. Miller, my sister, and my parents down to the harbor staging area. If they refuse to walk, assist them.""

David stepped forward, his massive frame towering over Logan. ""Ladies and gentlemen, please follow us toward the transport shuttle. Do not attempt to re-enter the main villa. Your personal luggage will be packed by resort staff and delivered to the mainland docks tomorrow morning.""

My father looked at me, his eyes burning with a mixture of shock, betrayal, and absolute humiliation. ""You will regret this, Isabel. You are cutting yourself off from your own blood! You will die alone in your corporate tower with nobody to love you!""

I looked down at Sophie, who was now resting her head against my shoulder, her breathing slow and peaceful, feeling the warmth of my embrace.

""I am not alone, Richard,"" I said softly. ""I have my daughter. And for the first time in thirty years, she is safe from you.""

Two security guards firmly took Logan by the arms, leading him away down the stone pathway. Victoria screamed, kicking and thrashing in her ruined silk gown as Eleanor wept loudly, clinging to her daughter's arm while two other guards guided them toward the harbor shuttle. My father walked behind them with his head bowed, clutching his empty scotch glass like a broken relic of a life that no longer existed.

Their shouting faded into the distant hum of the ocean waves, until finally, absolute silence returned to the cliffside terrace.
