Chapter 5 - Checkmate Before Dessert

The dining room plunged into an even deeper freeze. Graham’s fingers slowly slipped off the brass doorknob. He spun around, his tailored jacket hanging slightly crooked, his chest rising and falling in shallow, panicked bursts.
“You’re bluffing,” Graham rasped, though there was zero conviction left in his eyes. “You’re a low-level analyst. You don’t have access to active Department of Justice investigative dockets. You’re making this up to terrorize me.”
“Evan,” I said, looking across the table at my brother. “What happens when an individual subject to an active federal asset freeze opens an undisclosed commercial bank account under an altered tax identification number?”
Evan’s eyes flashed with fierce, predatory comprehension. “It immediately triggers an automatic referral from FinCEN to the United States Attorney’s Office for criminal contempt and money laundering. It revokes any deferred prosecution agreements instantly.”
“Exactly,” I said. I picked up my phone again. “When your name popped up on my system three weeks ago, I didn't say anything to Paige because I wanted to be certain. I reached out directly to Special Agent Marcus Vance—no relation to you, ironic as that is—at the Richmond field office of the FBI. Marcus led the original forensics probe on Apex Crest. He told me they had been building a fresh indictment against you for four months, but they were waiting on physical evidence connecting your new aliases to the offshore accounts holding the residual funds.”
I looked Graham dead in the eye.
“They knew you were hiding the master ledger on an encrypted hardware wallet. They just couldn't pinpoint where you carried it. But you couldn't resist showing off, could you?”
Graham’s face drained of what little color had returned. His hand instinctively reached toward the breast pocket of his tailored blazer, then stopped dead.
“At dinner,” I said, “when you were mocking my career and explaining how high finance works, you pulled out that sleek titanium keyfob to show Dad the remote starter on your leased Mercedes. That wasn’t a keyfob, Graham. That was a Ledger Stax hardware cryptocurrency wallet. The exact model purchased with an Apex Crest corporate debit card two weeks before the company collapsed.”
“You son of a bitch,” Graham whispered.
“I didn't steal it from you,” I continued smoothly. “I didn't touch your property. But while you were out on the porch telling me how people like me only handle ‘little problems’ while ambitious men like you do the important work... I took high-resolution macro photos of the serial number engraved on the bottom bezel. I sent that serial number to Special Agent Vance forty-five minutes ago.”
Right on cue, through the frosted glass of our front door, bright red and blue emergency lights began to flash against the dark Virginia pine trees outside.
There had been no sirens. No screeching tires. Just the quiet, methodical arrival of three unmarked black Ford Explorers and a Virginia State Police cruiser, pulling into our gravel driveway and blocking Graham’s rented Mercedes from behind.
Mom let out a soft cry and stepped closer to Dad, who wrapped a protective arm around her shoulders. Karen reached over and squeezed my hand tightly, a faint, proud smile tugging at the corner of her lips.
Graham turned around completely, staring at the flashing lights through the sheer curtains of the living room window. He looked like an animal that had just heard the steel jaw of a bear trap snap shut around its leg. His pristine veneer was entirely gone; his hair was disheveled, his shoulders slumped, and his breathing was ragged.
“Zachary...” Paige choked out, tears finally spilling down her cheeks as she realized the full nightmare she had narrowly escaped. “Did you... did you call them here? On Thanksgiving?”
May you like
“I didn't call them to ruin dinner, Paige,” I said gently, looking at my sister with genuine sympathy. “I told Marcus that Graham was attending a private gathering outside Richmond. Marcus said if I could confirm the serial number on that hardware wallet, they would execute the federal arrest warrant tonight before he could board his scheduled flight to the Cayman Islands on Sunday morning.”
Heavy footsteps crunched across the gravel outside, followed by the firm, deliberate thump of someone ascending our wooden front porch steps.
