Chapter 9 - The Rehearsal Dinner Collapse

That evening, the rehearsal dinner was held at the Grand View Country Club overlooking the rolling hills of Catawba County.
My parents had bought expensive new suits on credit, sitting at the end of the long dining table while June laughed nervously with Gene’s cousins.
The room was filled with regional executives, textile buyers, and civic leaders who had known the Vance family for fifty years.
The double doors opened, and Eleanor Vance walked into the banquet hall, followed by a member of the club staff carrying the white garment bag.
The room hushed respectfully as the matriarch approached the head table where Gene and June were seated under floral arches.
"Eleanor, darling!" my mother called out, trying to sound familiar and poised. "We were just talking about the wonderful Italian gown!"
Eleanor raised one hand, silencing the entire room with a single gesture that commanded absolute obedience.
"Gene, there will be no wedding this weekend," Eleanor announced clearly, her voice echoing off the crystal chandeliers.
Gene stood up, his face pale with sudden shock. "Mother, what are you talking about? The guests have already arrived!"
Eleanor unzipped the bag, pulling out the gown and laying it flat across the floral centerpiece on the table.
"Your bride told you this was imported from Europe at exorbitant expense, paid for through a personal line of credit she asked you to reimburse."
"In truth, her sister Maya stayed awake every night for six weeks crafting this with her own hands in a Hickory workshop."

Eleanor turned to June, whose face had turned the color of chalk as the guests began whispering furiously among themselves.
"And when the work was done, June uninvited the artist, demanded five thousand dollars in extortion, and attempted to bill you ten thousand more for a phantom debt."
