Chapter 4 - The Revelation

Paul frowned, his brow furrowing in irritation as he reached for the document I slid across the table. Camille and Joanne crowded over his shoulder, peering down at the crisp white sheet stamped with the gold seal of the State Department of Commerce.

It was Asterline Engineering Group’s founding corporate charter, dated seven years ago.

Under the section marked Founding Director, Sole Shareholder, and Chief Executive Officer, there was only one name printed in clean, bold typography:

Rowan Elizabeth Mercer.

Paul’s eyes locked onto the text. For five seconds, the room was so silent that the faint hum of the ceiling ventilation sounded like a roar. The color drained from his face so fast it looked as though someone had pulled a plug at the base of his neck, leaving his skin the shade of wet parchment.

""This... this is impossible,"" Paul mumbled, his fingers trembling as he traced the raised notary seal. ""You do web design. You do freelance spreadsheet formatting from your bedroom. You told us you worked in technical data.""

""I told you I ran an engineering consultancy,"" I replied coldly. ""You simply never listened long enough to hear the rest of the sentence. You tuned out the second I said the word 'engineering' because in your mind, Derek was the business heir and Camille was the star. Whenever I tried to talk about our first municipal contract, you changed the subject to Camille's marketing promotions. When we bought our corporate campus on Fourth Street, Mom asked me if I could help Camille pay for her bridal shower favors since I 'saved so much money living simply.'""

Joanne’s hand flew to her mouth, her knuckles white. ""Rowan... you... you own the entire firm?""

""I own eighty-five percent of it,"" I said. ""Marcus Chen owns the remaining fifteen. We have fifty-two full-time structural, civil, and mechanical engineers on payroll. We operate across six states. And for the last three years, Dad, my firm has quietly rewritten your company’s catastrophic structural blueprints so your buildings didn't collapse under snow loads.""

Paul shook his head violently, desperately trying to reject the reality crashing down on his skull. ""No. No, no. We work with a project lead named Chen. I negotiate our contracts with Marcus Chen!""

""Marcus answers to me,"" I stated flatly. ""Every time your junior draftsmen forgot to calculate wind sheer coefficients on the Harbor Point project, Marcus brought the files to my desk. I personally spent twelve hours every weekend redrafting your foundation permits because I didn't want my father’s business to be publicly humiliated by the state licensing board. I created the Mercer Priority Protocol in our system. I authorized our senior partners to drop paying Fortune 500 accounts to rescue your deadlines at standard billing rates.""

Camille grabbed Paul’s arm, her voice rising into an octave of sheer terror. ""Dad... what does that mean? Julian’s father said if Asterline doesn't deliver the stamped certifications to the municipal zoning board by noon tomorrow, the Vance Development Group is pulling their sixteen-million-dollar equity stake! Julian said his father will force us to annul the marriage! He said he won't let his family be tied to a fraudulent contractor who loses a municipal bid on technical negligence!""

Paul lunged toward me, dropping his hands onto the edge of the conference table, his knuckles turning purple against the dark wood. ""Rowan! You have to fix this! You have to log into your portal and reverse the cancellation! You're my daughter! You can't let your own family be destroyed over a stupid misunderstanding at a party!""

""A misunderstanding?"" I leaned forward, meeting his desperate gaze without blinking. ""You put me in an apron, Dad. You had two hundred chairs in that room. You had chairs for business rivals, chairs for third cousins you haven't seen in a decade, chairs for country club acquaintances you barely like. But when it came to your own daughter, you decided my only value was hauling dirty dishes out of sight so your wealthy clients wouldn't have to look at me.""

""I was stressed!"" Paul yelled, tears of humiliation finally springing to his eyes. ""The wedding was costing twice what we budgeted! We were bleeding cash waiting for the Apex advance! I didn't think you’d take it personally! You’ve always been quiet, Rowan! You never complained about helping before!""

""Because I thought my family loved me,"" I said, each word landing like an anvil. ""I thought if I worked hard enough, supported you quietly enough, and stayed out of your way, you would eventually see me. But yesterday, Camille looked me in the eyes and said, 'You should know your place by now.' And she was right. My place is not in your kitchen. My place is running the company that holds your entire life in its hands.""

""Rowan, please,"" Joanne wept openly now, reaching out across the table to grasp my sleeve. I took one step back, letting her fingers grasp empty air. ""Please, darling. Think of your father’s health! Think of Camille’s marriage! She just got married yesterday! Do you want her husband to leave her over this? What will people say? Our family will be ruined in front of the entire community!""

""Then you’d better start drafting your apologies to the community, Mom,"" I said smoothly. ""Because Asterline’s queue is locked. We do not offer priority exemptions to contractors who fail our corporate ethics evaluation.""

""Ethics?!"" Paul roared. ""I am your father!""

""And yesterday, you were a client who treated my staff and my person with gross disrespect,"" I said, standing tall. ""As the Chief Executive Officer of Asterline, I do not do business with clients who create reputational liability. Carlos!""

The heavy glass door swung open immediately. Carlos and an armed building security officer stepped into the conference room, their expressions stone-faced.

""Please escort these individuals off the premises,"" I said quietly, gathering my tablet. ""If they return without an appointment, file a formal trespass warning.""

""Rowan! Don't you walk away from me!"" Paul shouted as Carlos placed a firm hand on his shoulder. ""Rowan! If you do this, you don't have a family anymore! Do you hear me? You are dead to us!""

May you like

I paused at the elevator doors, turned back, and looked at the three of them—frantic, entitled, and utterly powerless for the first time in their lives.

""Dad,"" I said softly, ""I stopped having a family the moment you handed me an apron.""
