Chapter 9 - The Trial of the Old Guard

While Leo was recovering in the hospital, the underworld of New York was experiencing a tectonic shift.

Vincent’s failed rebellion had cracked the foundation of the old mafia commission. The remaining crime families, terrified of Luca’s ruthless preemptive strike and suspicious of his massive public philanthropy, called for an emergency tribunal at an abandoned shipyard warehouse in Red Hook.

""You're going alone?"" I asked that evening, watching Luca strap a shoulder holster over his crisp black dress shirt in our shared bedroom.

He paused, walking over to the vanity where I was brushing my hair. He took the silver brush from my hand and gently ran it through my long waves, a tender ritual we had developed over the past week.

""I'm going to finish this, Nora,"" he said, meeting my gaze in the mirror. ""The old families think my marriage made me weak. They think building a hospital for sick children means I’ve lost my teeth.""

""And have you?"" I teased softly, turning in the chair to wrap my arms around his waist.

Luca pulled me close, burying his face in the crook of my neck, inhaling deeply. ""For you and Leo, I am as gentle as rain. But for anyone who threatens our home, I am the fire that burns the city to the ground.""

""Come back to me in one piece,"" I murmured, pressing my lips against his jawline. ""We have dinner reservations tonight. And this time, you're not allowed to be late.""

""I would cross through hell before I miss another dinner with you,"" he swore against my lips, kissing me with a fierce, possessive passion that left me breathless.

Two hours later, the warehouse in Red Hook was tense enough to ignite.

Twelve bosses from the five families sat around an oval iron table, surrounded by heavily armed bodyguards. When Luca walked through the double doors, flanked only by Marco, every hand in the room instinctively dropped toward their concealed holsters.

""Ferraro,"" the eldest Don, Salvatore Moretti, gravelly voiced and bitter, barked from the head of the table. ""You wiped out Vincent’s entire bloodline without commission approval. You bought a public hospital with mob funds. You're bringing federal heat onto all of us!""

Luca didn't sit. He walked to the center of the room, tossing a single flash drive onto the iron table.

""On that drive,"" Luca stated, his voice resonating through the concrete rafters, ""is every financial ledger, shell company, and offshore account belonging to Vincent. He wasn't just planning to kill my wife. He had cut a deal with the Department of Justice to sell out every single boss in this room in exchange for immunity.""

The bosses exchanged frantic, suspicious glances. Moretti quickly plugged the drive into a rugged laptop. As the files loaded, showing detailed witness protection agreements and wiretap transcripts with Vincent's signature, the color drained from the old men's faces.

""I didn't kill a brother,"" Luca said, stepping forward, his eyes burning with absolute authority. ""I eliminated a rat who was leading the feds to your doorsteps. I saved your families, your fortunes, and your freedom.""

He paused, resting his palms on the table, leaning over the stunned bosses.

""From this night forward, the Ferraro syndicate operates in the daylight. We are transitioning our capital into real estate, medical infrastructure, and legitimate shipping. Those who want to partner with me will see their profits double. Those who want to cling to street hits and kidnapping...""

Luca let the threat hang in the heavy air.

""Speak now,"" he challenged, his voice dripping with venom. ""Or swear your loyalty to my table.""

Don Moretti slowly closed the laptop. He stood up, bowed his gray head, and extended his hand. ""Ferraro... you lead. We follow.""

One by one, the most ruthless men on the East Coast stood and bowed their heads. The empire was secured. The war was over.
