Chapter 6 - A Wife's Retribution

The acoustic charge hit the outer wall with a dull, ringing shockwave that vibrated through Clara’s teeth. The thick steel plate held, but the secondary hydraulic line hissed, spraying vapor into the housing. A red warning light flashed on the vault’s control panel: Lock Mechanism Compromised. Emergency Release in 180 Seconds.

"The breaching charge fried the sensor loop," Leo cursed, struggling to pull himself upright against the metal racks. He reached for a modified M4 carbine, his knuckles white with strain, but his side tore again, fresh blood soaking through the makeshift dressing. A sharp cry escaped his throat, and he sank back to the floor, his vision swimming in gray static. "Damn it... not now..."

"Stay down, Leo," Clara commanded.

She wasn't asking. She had strapped a lightweight Kevlar vest over her sleep shirt, tightening the side velcro with practiced efficiency. She racked the slide of a compact 9mm pistol with a crisp, authoritative click, slipping two extra magazines into the vest pockets. She grabbed a tactical shotgun from the rack—a weapon she had fired hundreds of times on her father’s estate when she was just a teenager learning clay targets.

"Clara, listen to me," Leo begged, his voice cracking with desperation. He reached out, his bloody fingers catching the hem of her tactical vest. "You don't cross that threshold. You don't know what it does to you... pulling that trigger. Once you step into this world, you can never wash the stain off."

Clara looked down at him. She dropped to one knee, cupping his jaw with her hand, leaning in until their foreheads touched.

"You took a bullet for me tonight, Leo," she whispered softly. "You spent two years being the villain in my story just to keep me innocent. But I don't want innocence anymore. I want you alive. And I want justice for my father."

She kissed him—hard, fierce, and full of raw, unvarnished devotion—tasting the copper and salt on his lips. It was the first real kiss of their marriage, born not of obligation or polite society, but of blood, survival, and a love that had taken root in the dark.

Leo’s eyes widened, a look of fierce, unyielding reverence passing over his battered features. "Behind the door," he whispered, conceding to the inevitable. "The light switch for the library is on the left jam. Cut the power the second it opens. They have thermal optics, but the ambient dust from the blast will blind them for four seconds. Aim low."

"I'm ready," she said.

*Ten seconds.*

The vault door shuddered as the emergency hydraulic release disengaged.

*Five.*

Clara racked the shotgun, bringing the stock tight against her shoulder, feet planted wide, breath drawn deep into her lungs.

The steel door hissed open, sliding into the wall.

Through the gap, two mercenaries in full tactical gear stepped forward, weapons raised, aiming straight into the vault.

Clara didn't hesitate. She slapped the master lighting toggle on the wall with her elbow, plunging the entire library into pitch darkness, and squeezed the trigger.

The shotgun roared, a blinding muzzle flash illuminating the space in staccato bursts. The heavy buckshot caught the first operative center-mass, slamming him backward into his partner with devastating force. The second man fired wildly into the ceiling, drywall and splintered plaster raining down like snow, before Clara pumped another round into the chamber and fired again.

Both men went down, motionless on the ruined hardwood.

Through the ringing in her ears, Clara heard the sharp, frantic tap of a cane retreating down the long gallery corridor toward the conservatory.

Vincent was running.

Clara stepped over the bodies in the doorway, the shotgun lowered, her face set in stone. She didn't feel panic. She didn't feel fear. The trembling in her hands had vanished completely, replaced by a cold, predatory focus she hadn't known she possessed.

"Vincent!" she called out, her voice cutting through the smoke-filled mansion like an executioner's bell. "You left your dress behind!"
