Chapter 7 - The Trial by Fire

Hours felt like centuries inside the bunker. The reinforced walls were soundproof, but occasionally the deep shudder of high-caliber explosives vibrated through the concrete floor.

Leo lay curled in my lap on the leather cot, his little fingers clutching Kieran’s silver-embroidered handkerchief, which he had dropped before the doors closed. Dr. Vance sat in the corner, monitoring Leo’s vitals on a portable screen, her face pale but determined.

"His heart rate is stabilizing," Dr. Vance whispered softly. "He's brave, Saraphina. Just like you."

"I'm not brave," I choked out, staring at the steel door. "I'm terrified. What if Kieran doesn't come back? What if Dominic broke through?"

"I've known Kieran Blackwood for fifteen years," Dr. Vance replied, adjusting an IV line. "Men in this city don't fear him because he's cruel; they fear him because he's invincible when he has something to protect. In all the years I've worked for his family, I have never seen him look at anyone the way he looked at you tonight. He will tear down the sky before he lets anyone take you."

At 5:18 A.M., the hydraulic locks suddenly hissed.

My heart leaped into my throat. I stood up instantly, putting myself between the door and the cot, grabbing a heavy steel wrench from an emergency toolkit.

The door swung open with a heavy groan.

Through the fog of extinguishing foam and gunpowder smoke stood Kieran.

His face was blackened with soot, his knuckles split, and his left arm was crudely bandaged with a torn strip of black cloth. But he was standing tall. Behind him, Marcus and four heavily armed guards stood watch in the cleared corridor.

Kieran’s eyes scanned the room until they found me. The ruthless killer vanished, replaced by an exhaustion so profound it made him sway slightly on his feet.

"It's over," Kieran rasped.

I dropped the wrench. It hit the floor with a loud clang, and I ran across the room, throwing my arms around his neck. I buried my face into his shoulder, sobbing with pure, unfiltered relief. He winced slightly at his wound, but wrapped his good arm around my waist, lifting me off my feet and burying his face into the curve of my neck.

"You're alive... you're alive," I repeated like a prayer.

"I promised you," Kieran murmured against my skin, his voice trembling with an emotion he couldn't hide. "Dominic Moretti's syndicate is finished. His captains surrendered an hour ago. He will never threaten this family again."

"Family?" I whispered, pulling back just enough to look into his tired, bruised face.

Kieran didn't hesitate. "I don't care about bloodlines or syndicates, Saraphina. For eighteen months, this house was just a cold mausoleum where I waited to die. You and Leo brought light into these walls. If you'll have me... I want to be his father. And I want to be your husband."

Tears streamed down my cheeks as I looked into the eyes of New York's most feared man—a man who had just risked his empire and his life for a maid and her sick child.

"Yes," I breathed, kissing his bruised cheek. "A thousand times yes."

From the cot, a tiny voice piped up, filled with childlike wonder. "Mommy, does that mean the giant is staying forever?"

Kieran laughed, a rich, genuine sound that echoed through the bunker, before walking over and lifting Leo into his arms. "Forever, little man. I'm never letting you go."
