Chapter 6 - Julian’s Desperation

Twenty-four hours later, I found myself sitting in a private visitation room at the county detention center. Marcus sat immediately to my left, a thick leather portfolio resting on the steel table between us. I had not wanted to come. My body was aching, my feet were swollen to twice their normal size, and every kick from my unborn daughter was a sharp reminder that our world was changing by the minute. But Marcus had insisted. There were emergency signatures required, and Julian was refusing to sign over the corporate deed transfers without seeing me face-to-face.
When the heavy steel door buzzed open, the man who walked in bore almost no resemblance to the polished corporate executive I had lived with for seven years. Julian was dressed in bright orange canvas scrubs that swallowed his frame. His designer haircut was a tangled mess, dark circles were carved deep beneath his hollow eyes, and his wrists were chafed red from handcuffs.
He sat down across from me, the metal chair screeching against the concrete floor. The guard took up a position in the corner, arms crossed, hand resting casually on his utility belt.
“Audrey,” Julian croaked, his voice raw, as if he had spent the night screaming into the walls of his cell. “Audrey, please. You have to tell them to drop the federal charges. The FBI visited me this morning. They’re talking about wire fraud, money laundering, interstate transportation of stolen securities. They’re talking about ten to fifteen years in a federal penitentiary!”
I looked at him, feeling an odd, hollow sensation. There was no rage left, no tears, no heartbreak. Just the profound clarity that comes after surviving a devastating storm.
“You did those things, Julian,” I said quietly. “You stole from your company. You stole from your wife. You stole from your dead wife’s son.”
Julian slammed his cuffed hands against the table, making the steel shudder. “I did it to get ahead! The market was crushing me! I was drowning, Audrey! Clara knew people in Miami, she knew how to hide the capital so we wouldn't lose everything to creditors! I was going to bring you and the kids down after the dust settled!”
“Do not insult my intelligence,” I snapped, leaning forward, refusing to shrink back. “We heard the recordings on the flash drive, Julian. We heard you telling Clara that once I was exhausted with the newborn, you would convince the court I had severe post-partum psychosis. You planned to put me in an institution while you took my daughter and Leo to Florida.”
Julian flinched, looking away, unable to meet my eyes. The cowardice was written in every twitch of his mouth.
“And Clara?” I continued, a cold smile touching my lips. “Your brilliant partner in crime? She took a plea deal two hours ago. She surrendered every single password to the Cayman accounts, gave them the deed to the Sarasota house, and handed over eighteen months of WhatsApp messages proving you were the mastermind behind the entire scheme. In exchange, she gets five years. You, Julian, are facing twenty.”
Julian’s face went pasty white. He began to hyperventilate, pulling at his collar as if the prison scrubs were choking him. “She... she turned on me? But she loved me! She said we were partners!”
“She loved your money, Julian. The money you stole from me and your children.” Marcus pulled out a set of legal documents and slid them across the cold metal table, along with a black ballpoint pen. “Sign these, Mr. Vance. Full surrender of Vance Logistics LLC, full release of the family residence and its equity, and unconditional relinquishment of parental rights to Leo Vance, consenting to Audrey Vance’s sole legal adoption.”
Julian stared at the documents as if they were dipped in poison. “My parental rights? To my own son? You’re stripping me of my son?”
May you like
“You stripped yourself of him the day you threatened to call the police on him for crying,” I said, my voice cutting like a razor. “The day you let your mistress throw his mother’s portrait into the trash. Leo is terrified of you, Julian. But he is safe with me. He will always be safe with me.”
Julian gripped the pen with trembling, sweat-slicked fingers. Tears of pure self-pity streamed down his cheeks as he signed his name across the dotted lines, surrendering every shred of authority, wealth, and family he had ever possessed.
