Chapter 9 - The Waiting Room Revelation

The waiting room was vast, quiet, and smelled faintly of floor polish and institutional coffee. Dad and I sat in two vinyl chairs near the large panoramic windows overlooking the hospital courtyard. For the first two hours, neither of us said much, lost in our own thoughts as the digital tracking board refreshed every fifteen minutes with status updates for Patient #4108.
Around 10:00 AM, Dad stood up, bought two cups of black coffee from the vending machine, and handed one to me.
""She called me yesterday afternoon from her sister’s house,"" Dad said softly, sitting back down. ""She moved in with Clara after the process server delivered the petition.""
""What did she want?"" I asked, blowing on the hot surface of the coffee.
""She wanted me to drop the financial disclosure demand. She claimed that if we divorced quietly through mediation without involving forensic accountants, she would let me keep the house and the cars."" Dad shook his head with a bitter smile. ""She didn't realize that my attorney had already pulled the banking transcripts from the state department of revenue.""
I raised an eyebrow. ""What did they find?""
""She had been siphoning money from our joint retirement account for nearly four years,"" Dad revealed, his voice devoid of anger, replaced only by a profound, hollow exhaustion. ""Small amounts at first—five hundred here, a thousand there. She was transferring it into an individual brokerage account under her maiden name. She had accumulated over forty-five thousand dollars while constantly telling me that we were barely breaking even on our monthly expenses.""
I stared at him, stunned. ""She had forty-five thousand dollars hidden in her own name, and she still stole the twelve thousand from Ben's medical account?""
""Yes,"" Dad said, staring out the window. ""Because in her twisted mind, her hidden money was hers, while our money was communal property to be sacrificed for her public image. She stole your savings because she considered you an expendable asset. She would rather let her son go lame than spend a single dime of her secret hoard.""
The sheer depravity of her narcissism was staggering. It wasn't just poor judgment or vanity; it was calculated, predatory exploitation of the people who loved her most.
""Did you confront her?"" I asked.
""My lawyer did,"" Dad said quietly. ""Under state law, fraudulent dissipation and concealment of marital assets carries severe financial penalties. The judge has already issued an emergency attachment order freezing her private brokerage account. By the time the final decree is signed, she will receive virtually nothing from the marital estate, and her secret account will be liquidated to reimburse my retirement and pay for my legal fees. She tried to play a game of absolute control, Daniel, and she lost every single card she was holding.""
Before I could reply, the automatic doors slid open and Dr. Vance walked into the waiting lounge, still in his surgical scrubs, pulling down his paper mask.
Dad and I both surged to our feet. ""Dr. Vance?""
May you like
The surgeon smiled broadly, wiping his brow. ""He did fantastically well. The tendon tear was cleanly anchored back to the bone with three titanium suture anchors, and the nerve was completely freed from the impingement. We tested the stability before closing, and the repair is rock solid. He's in the post-anesthesia care unit waking up right now. In about forty-five minutes, you can go back and see him.""
A massive weight, one that had been crushing my chest for six long months, lifted instantly into the air. Dad let out a ragged sob, covering his face with his hands as the tension finally broke.
