Chapter 8 - The Morning of the Surgery

Tuesday morning arrived beneath a blanket of pale gray autumn dawn. The city streets were quiet and damp with morning mist as I drove Ben toward the regional surgical pavilion. Inside the car, the heater hummed softly, keeping the autumn chill at bay. Ben was quiet, his eyes fixed on the horizon, nervous but determined.

We checked in at the surgical admissions desk at 6:15 AM. The administrative clerk looked at the file, stamped the pre-authorization paperwork, and handed Ben his patient identification bracelet.

""Everything is fully cleared with billing, Mr. Carter,"" the receptionist said with a professional smile. ""You can head right through the double doors to pre-op bay four.""

Hearing those words felt like crossing an invisible finish line. The eight thousand dollars from Dad’s secured funds had been processed without a hitch, and the medical facility fees were paid in full. There were no surprise holds, no panicked phone calls, and no last-minute cancellations.

In the pre-op bay, a nurse helped Ben change into a surgical gown and started an IV line in his left hand. The surgical team moved around him with calm, rhythmic efficiency. Within an hour, Dr. Vance, the chief orthopedic surgeon, stepped into the cubicle wearing his surgical scrubs. He had a warm, confident demeanor that instantly put Ben at ease.

""Good morning, Benjamin,"" Dr. Vance said, reviewing the digital scans on his tablet. ""We have a solid plan today. We’re going to perform an arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, clear out the inflamed bursa, and decompress the subacromial space to free up that pinched nerve. It’s a meticulous procedure, but you're young, healthy, and your tissue quality looks good. You're going to regain full range of motion if you stick diligently to your rehabilitation program.""

""Thank you, Doctor,"" Ben said, his voice thick with relief. ""I'll do whatever the physical therapist says.""

""That's what I like to hear. We'll take excellent care of you.""

As the anesthesiologist arrived to administer the pre-sedation cocktail, the curtain rustled. I looked up, expecting another nurse, but found Dad standing at the entrance of the bay. He wore a simple flannel shirt and jeans, looking humble and subdued. He didn't come in all the way; he just stood at the perimeter, respecting Ben's space.

Ben looked at him through the hazy beginnings of the sedative. ""Hey, Dad.""

Dad stepped forward slowly, tears glistening in the corners of his eyes. ""Hey, son. I promised I'd be here. I'm sitting out in the main waiting room. I just wanted to see you before you went back.""

Ben smiled faintly, extending his left hand from the edge of the gurney. Dad reached out and held it with both of his weathered hands, squeezing gently.

""You're going to do great,"" Dad whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. ""I love you, Ben. I love you both so much. I am so sorry for everything that happened to bring us here.""

""I know, Dad,"" Ben murmured as the medication began to take effect, his eyelids growing heavy. ""Thank you for showing up.""

The orderly unlocked the wheels of the gurney, maneuvering it smoothly into the brightly lit central hallway leading toward the sterile surgical suites. Dad and I walked side-by-side behind the gurney until we reached the red line marking the sterile zone. We watched as the double doors swung shut behind Ben.
