Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Guests

The doors of the white sedan flew open with violent force.

My mother stormed out of the passenger side, her face flushed crimson beneath an expensive layer of bronzer. She was still wearing her elaborate matching beach-linen ensemble from the morning photo shoot, though her hair was visibly disheveled from the wind. Robert emerged from the driver's seat, slamming the car door so hard the side mirror shook, while Ashley stepped out from the back, clutching her designer handbag like a weapon.

""Laura!"" Patricia screeched, marching toward the porch steps with an outstretched, accusatory finger. ""How dare you! How dare you turn off your phone and humiliate us like this!""

Noah woke with a start on the porch swing, his eyes wide with fear as he scrambled behind my legs, clutching my skirt. Clara stepped quietly to the edge of the porch railing, while Diane folded her arms across her chest, a look of steely amusement settling onto her face.

I stood at the top of the porch stairs, standing tall and blocking Noah completely from their sight. ""Get off this property, Mom.""

""Don't you take that tone with me!"" Patricia shouted, stopping at the bottom step, breathing heavily. ""Do you have any idea what you did today? We paid seven hundred dollars for a celebrity beach photographer to shoot our sunrise portraits! Ashley's children stood on the dunes for an hour waiting for you to show up with Noah!""

""You had two children on the dunes,"" I replied, my voice chillingly level. ""Which was exactly how many grandchildren you booked rooms for.""

Ashley pushed past our mother, her designer sunglasses pushed up into her hair, her eyes blazing with narcissistic fury. ""You completely ruined our family portrait, Laura! The entire concept was based on three grandchildren surrounding Mom and Dad on a vintage wooden bench! The photographer said the composition looked completely unbalanced with just Oliver and Mia! Everyone at my country club is going to ask where the other grandchild is! Mom had to sit by the pool and cry into her towel for two hours because people were staring at us!""

""Your mother cried because she had an empty seat in a photo?"" Diane interjected, her voice cutting through the humid air like a surgical scalpel.

Ashley whirled toward Diane, her lip curling in disgust. ""Who the hell are you? Wait... you're that rude receptionist from the lobby! What are you doing here? Did you help my sister steal this property?""

Robert stepped up beside his wife, pulling his leather wallet from his slacks with a theatrical flick of his wrist. ""I know how this town operates. Laura, you obviously tricked some local supervisor into letting you squat in foundation housing. We tracked your car using the family sharing app on your father's cloud account before you thought to turn it off."" He pulled a thick wad of bills from his wallet and thrust it toward Clara. ""Here's five hundred dollars for whatever unauthorized cleaning fees my daughter incurred. Pack your bags, Laura. You are coming back to the resort right now. The photographer agreed to do a reshoot at sunset, and Noah is going to be in it.""

He reached past me, attempting to grab Noah by the arm. ""Come on, buddy. Grandpa's got a nice shirt for you in the trunk. Let's go take our picture.""

Noah shrank back, burying his face into the fabric of my trousers, whimpering softly.

""Touch my son, Robert, and I will have you arrested before you take another breath,"" I said, stepping directly into his personal space, my eyes locking onto his with a ferocious maternal rage that made the grown man flinch and pull his hand back.

""Laura, you are out of your mind!"" Patricia yelled, stamping her foot onto the bottom wooden step. ""We are your family! We brought you on this vacation out of the goodness of our hearts! We gave you an opportunity to be part of something beautiful, and you throw a tantrum because you didn't get a five-star suite! You're ungrateful, selfish, and bitter that Ashley built a successful life while you're scraping by as a single mother!""

""A successful life built on your handouts,"" I retorted, letting out a sharp, bitter laugh. ""You canceled Noah's bed two weeks ago, Mom. You traded his vacation so Ashley could have free champagne in a cabana. You told me to put a six-year-old boy in a hot car overnight in a parking lot. Do you know what normal people call that? Child endangerment.""

Patricia’s face turned an ugly shade of mottled purple. ""I was joking! Any idiot would know I was joking! We were going to let him sleep on the sofa bed in our living room after dinner!""

""No, you weren't,"" Diane spoke up, pulling a printed resort document from her folder. ""Because your Presidential Suite booking explicitly registered an adult occupancy limit of four guests, with a strict zero-tolerance penalty for unregistered overnight visitors. You never intended to let him inside that suite, Mrs. Vance. You intended to lock your doors at night and let your daughter figure it out on the street.""

Robert’s eyes narrowed into slits as he glared at Diane. ""I am an executive member of your resort's diamond rewards tier! I spend thirty thousand dollars a year across your chain! I will have your job for this insolence! What is your name?""

Clara, who had remained silent the entire time, calmly stepped down the wooden porch steps until she was standing inches away from my father.
