Chapter 7 - The Unraveling of Craig

Two hours in a hospital waiting room feels like an eternity. I sat near the window, watching the rain begin to patter against the glass, overlooking the gray expanse of Raleigh’s medical district. My phone buzzed on the armrest. It was Brooke.

""How is he?"" she asked gently as soon as I picked up.

""He's frail, Brooke. Really frail,"" I confessed, my voice breaking slightly. ""He held my hand and cried. He knows what they did. He was trapped in that house while they drained everything he worked forty years to build.""

""And Diane?""

""Greedy to the end. She tried to guilt me into writing a blank check. But I gave them the terms. I’m waiting on Sarah, your attorney friend.""

""Nick, you did the right thing,"" Brooke reassured me. ""Protecting Glenn doesn't mean enabling them. You're giving him a fighting chance without letting them drag our family down into their pit.""

""Thank you, babe. Kiss Oliver for me.""

""He drew a picture for Grandpa Glenn,"" Brooke said softly. ""A green T-Rex holding a balloon. He wants you to give it to him.""

A lump formed in my throat so large I could barely swallow. ""I will. I'll make sure Dad sees it today.""

Just as I hung up, the waiting room door swung open. It wasn't the attorney. It was Craig, alone.

He looked battered, ten years older than his thirty-six years. He had thrown away his paper coffee cup and smelled faintly of rain and panic. He sat down three chairs away from me, elbows on his knees, staring at the linoleum pattern on the floor.

""She's not going to sign, Nick,"" Craig muttered quietly. ""She’s calling Aunt Brenda, trying to see if anyone in the family can loan her ten grand to fight you for custody.""

""Brenda doesn't have ten grand, Craig,"" I said without looking at him. ""Nobody in this family has money because every time someone saves a dollar, you and Mom find a way to borrow it and burn it.""

Craig dropped his head into his hands, rubbing his temples violently. ""I didn't mean for this to happen, man. I swear to God I didn't.""

""Then why did you do it, Craig? Why take the house?""

""Because I was drowning!"" Craig cried out, his voice cracking with genuine, unvarnished misery. ""Ever since I tore my rotator cuff in college, Mom treated me like this fragile, broken prodigy who just needed one more break to be great. She convinced Dad that every failure I had was just bad luck. She pushed me to take risks I wasn't ready for! When the trucking deal went south, I told her we should sell the house, downsize, and get Dad into an early retirement community. She wouldn't hear it. She said our family doesn't surrender. She said you were living high and mighty in your big house and that we had to show you we could make it big too.""

I turned my head to look at my older brother. The golden boy. The star athlete. All his life, I had envied him for receiving our parents' undivided attention, their boundless praise, their endless second chances.

Standing in the harsh fluorescent light of this hospital, I realized the horrifying truth: their favor had been his curse. They had coddled him into utter helplessness, insulating him from consequence until he was a grown man incapable of surviving reality. Meanwhile, their neglect had forced me to forge my own strength, find Brooke, build a real career, and learn how to stand on my own two feet.

""She weaponized you against me, Craig,"" I said softly, the old anger melting into a profound, mournful pity. ""And you let her.""

""I know,"" Craig whispered, tears slipping through his fingers. ""I know she did. When she bought that stupid bear yesterday, I told her it was a terrible idea. I told her you’d see right through it. She said you were soft. She said you always wanted her approval so badly that you’d crumble the second she showed up.""

""She was wrong.""

May you like

Craig lifted his head, his eyes red-rimmed and bloodshot. ""If I sign the paperwork as the secondary witness and surrender the keys to Dad's rig... will you really save him, Nick? Will you get him into Charlotte?""

""Yes,"" I answered without a second of hesitation. ""I keep my word, Craig. I always have.""
