Chapter 7 - The Desperate Bail Hearing

The following morning at ten o'clock, the preliminary bail hearing convened at the county municipal courthouse. The courtroom was packed with local reporters and prominent townspeople, eager to witness the downfall of one of the community's most self-righteous socialites.

Diane and Melissa were brought in wearing standard orange detention jumpsuits, their hands and ankles shackled. Without her makeup, designer wardrobe, and manicured facade, Diane looked hollow, haggard, and visibly aged. Melissa kept her head bowed, weeping continuously into her lap.

Judge Alvarez, a stern woman known for having zero tolerance for domestic violence, adjusted her reading glasses and reviewed the charges.

""Case number 4092: State versus Diane Harper and Melissa Harper,"" the judge announced. ""Charges include attempted reckless homicide, aggravated assault, grand larceny exceeding one hundred thousand dollars, identity theft, and commercial real estate fraud. Mr. District Attorney, what is the state's recommendation on bail?""

The prosecutor stood immediately. ""Your Honor, the defendants demonstrated an extraordinary disregard for human life by abandoning a concussed, semi-conscious victim in freezing weather after stripping her of communication devices. Furthermore, financial analysis reveals multiple offshore accounts and an attempt to liquidate real estate assets illicitly. The state considers both defendants extreme flight risks and a direct danger to the victim. We request remand without bail.""

Diane’s court-appointed public defender stood up quickly, sweating under his collar. ""Your Honor, my clients have deep roots in this community. Mrs. Harper is a well-known civic figure. She simply had a domestic misunderstanding with her daughter-in-law. A reasonable bond of fifty thousand dollars would ensure their appearance.""

""A misunderstanding?"" Judge Alvarez cut in, her voice booming through the silent courtroom. ""Counsel, I have reviewed the emergency medical intake records. The victim’s internal body temperature was eighty-eight degrees upon arrival at St. Matthew’s. Another thirty minutes in that snowbank and the state would be trying your clients for capital murder.""

Diane suddenly bolted to her feet, defying her attorney’s frantic hand gestures to sit down.

""Your Honor, you don't understand!"" Diane pleaded, her voice echoing off the wood-paneled walls. ""Ethan is my son! Everything he has belongs to our family! I took care of that house! Emily was an outsider trying to steal him away from us! You cannot keep me locked in a cage like an animal while that woman sleeps in my father's bed!""

Judge Alvarez banged her gavel with a sharp, echoing crack. ""Silence, defendant! You do not speak out of turn in my court.""

The judge looked down at the documents before her, then fixed Diane with an icy stare.

""Based on the violent nature of the offenses, the overwhelming documentation of premeditated financial fraud, and the blatant lack of remorse demonstrated by the defendant, bail for Diane Harper is denied. Bail for Melissa Harper is set at five hundred thousand dollars, with the condition of full house arrest and an electronic monitoring ankle bracelet should bond be posted.""

Diane slumped back into her chair, her jaw hanging slack in total disbelief. She turned her head toward the gallery, searching desperately for me. I was sitting in the front row, wearing my service dress uniform, watching her with absolute composure.

""Ethan!"" she screamed as the bailiffs grabbed her arms to drag her toward the holding cells. ""You did this to me! I cursed the day you were born! You hear me? You're no son of mine!""

I didn't answer. I simply adjusted my cap, stood up, and walked out of the courtroom into the bright winter sunshine.
