Chapter 5 - Stripping the Fortress

The living room of Evergreen Terrace transformed into an active crime scene within minutes. Detective Miller methodically searched the upstairs master suite, emerging with Diane's laptop, three flash drives, and the original forged transfer deeds she had intended to file at the county recorder’s office later that afternoon.

Melissa was sitting on the living room sofa, sobbing hysterically into her hands. ""Ethan, please! I didn't do anything! It was Mom's idea! She said the house was going to waste because you were always deployed! She said we deserved to live in comfort!""

""You stood on the porch and laughed while Emily was lying unconscious in the driveway,"" I reminded her, keeping my distance. ""You wore my clothes, drove the car I paid for, and spent Emily’s grocery allowance on weekend clubbing in the city. You made your choice, Melissa.""

Deputy Harris escorted Diane into the kitchen so the investigators could inventory her personal effects. Even in handcuffs, she fought with every ounce of spite she possessed.

""This is an outrage!"" Diane bellowed, her face mottled with rage. ""Wait until the social registry hears about this! Wait until my friends at the historical society find out that a decorated soldier turned his own family onto the street in the dead of winter!""

David Mitchell adjusted his glasses, completely unbothered by her screaming. ""Diane, the historical society will be far more interested in knowing why you attempted to sell a landmark property using a forged power of attorney. That carries a mandatory minimum sentence of seven years in state prison. Furthermore, the district attorney has reviewed Emily's medical intake photos. In this county, leaving someone exposed to sub-zero temperatures with a traumatic head injury is prosecuted as attempted depraved-heart murder.""

Diane went deathly pale. The word 'murder' seemed to pierce through the thick armor of her narcissism. Her knees buckled slightly, and Deputy Harris had to grip her arm to keep her upright.

""Ethan..."" she whispered, her voice dropping into a desperate, quivering plea. ""You wouldn't let them put your own mother in a cell. Think of the family name. Think of what your grandfather would say.""

""Grandfather knew exactly who you were,"" I replied coldly. ""That's why he gave everything to me. He told me before he died: 'Ethan, a man who cannot protect his home from wolves inside the fence cannot protect his country.' I protected my country for two years, Diane. Now I am protecting my home.""

Detective Miller stepped back down the stairs holding several luxury shopping bags and two heavy jewelry boxes. ""Captain Harper, we need you to identify if these items were purchased using trust disbursement funds.""

I inspected the receipts taped to the boxes. Diamond earrings, designer watches, and high-end leather goods totaling over ninety thousand dollars—all billed directly to the household maintenance credit line I had established to care for the property.

""None of these were authorized,"" I confirmed. ""Seize them as evidence of embezzlement.""

""No! That's mine!"" Melissa screamed, lunging off the sofa toward the detective. Deputy Harris immediately intercepted her, twisting her arms behind her back and clicking a second pair of cuffs around her slender wrists.

""Melissa Harper, you are under arrest for accessory to grand larceny and obstruction of justice,"" Deputy Harris stated formally, reading her Miranda rights as she thrashed against his grip.

Within an hour, both Diane and Melissa were led out the front door, down the snow-covered walkway, and into the back of separate patrol cars. The neighbors on Evergreen Terrace, drawn by the flashing red and blue strobe lights, stood on their porches in winter coats, watching the grand Diane Harper being marched away in disgrace.

As the cruisers backed down the driveway and disappeared around the pine-lined bend, the oppressive weight that had hung over the house for two years finally began to lift.
