Chapter 4 - The Corporate Audit

During the fifteen-minute recess, the corridor outside Courtroom 4B erupted into absolute chaos.

Chloe Vance had arrived at the courthouse after receiving frantic text messages from Andrew, wearing dark sunglasses and designer clothes.

The moment Ruth saw the young assistant stepping out of the elevator, she charged across the marble lobby like an enraged lioness.

“You little thief!” Ruth screamed, lunging toward Chloe with her diamond rings flashing in the halogen lights.

“You used our family money to buy a penthouse while smiling in my face at company dinners!”

Two building security officers immediately stepped between them, forcing Ruth against the wall while Chloe retreated into the stairwell.

Andrew stood by the water fountain with his head spinning, watching his carefully constructed world tear itself apart at the seams.

He spotted me standing near the glass balcony overlooking the courthouse atrium, sipping black coffee from a paper cup.

He broke away from Calder and marched over to me, his chest heaving with desperate, ragged breaths.

“Mara, please!” Andrew pleaded, his voice cracking with hysteria.

“You don't understand what you’re doing! If the board hears about Sapphire Horizon, they will force me out as CEO!”

I took a slow sip of the coffee, looking into the eyes of the man I had loved for seven years.

“You should have thought about the board before you handed me a forged agreement and told me I was a zero, Andrew.”

“I was angry, Mara! I was under immense pressure from my father to expand the fleet!” he stammered, reaching for my hand.

I stepped back cleanly, letting his hand fall empty into the space between us.

“Don't touch me, Andrew. You aren't talking to your obedient housekeeper anymore.”

“You are talking to Captain Pierce.”

“And Captain Pierce doesn't negotiate with criminals.”

Andrew’s eyes filled with genuine panic as the full weight of his situation crashed down on his shoulders.

“What do you want, Mara? Name your price! Ten million? Fifteen million? I’ll sign whatever you want!”

“I don't want your bribes, Andrew,” I replied softly, my voice completely devoid of malice.

“I want the forensic truth.”

“And unlike your high-priced attorneys, I don't charge four hundred dollars an hour to find it.”

Before Andrew could respond, the heavy courtroom doors swung open again, and the bailiff announced the return of the bench.

Calder hurried over, grabbing Andrew by the elbow and hauling him back toward the defense table.

“Pull yourself together, Andrew,” Calder hissed under his breath. “If you break down in front of Porter, she’ll give her the whole company.”

They took their seats just as Judge Porter re-entered the room, her black robe billowing behind her.

She settled into her high-backed chair and picked up her reading glasses.

“Mrs. Ellison,” the judge said, looking directly at me. “Do you have any further exhibits before we proceed to temporary relief?”

“Only one final item for today, Your Honor,” I answered, reaching into the deep pocket of my leather briefcase.

I withdrew a thick, gold-embossed ledger bound in red leather ribbon.

The sight of that specific ledger caused Andrew’s remaining color to drain completely from his face.

It was the private offshore operating logbook of Ellison Logistics—a book his father had kept hidden in their lake house safe for two decades.

A book they believed had been lost in a fire five years ago.
