Chapter 6 - The Secret in the Safe

While Whitaker Auto was rapidly hemorrhaging business, Grant was sitting at our kitchen table, staring at a blank legal pad. The shame that had weighed him down on Sunday was slowly burning away, replaced by an unfamiliar sensation: freedom.

""I can't go back, Audrey,"" he told me as I poured him a fresh mug of black coffee. ""Even if she begged me on her knees. The way she laughed when Travis poured that beer on Sadie... it broke something inside me. I was blind for ten years.""

""You were loyal, Grant,"" I corrected him gently. ""There's no shame in loving your family. The shame belongs to the people who took advantage of that love.""

My phone chimed with an incoming email. It was from our personal attorney, Marcus Vance, a sharp military veteran who specialized in probate, contracts, and small business law. When Travis had been arrested, I hadn't just reported the assault; I had retained Marcus to pull the legal filings on Whitaker Auto and Tire. Something about the way Darlene controlled the entire estate had always smelled rotten to me.

""Audrey, Grant,"" Marcus said when we got him on a conference call ten minutes later. ""I just pulled the probate records from Chatham County regarding your father's estate from six years ago. You two need to see this.""

""See what, Marcus?"" Grant asked, leaning toward the speaker.

""When your father passed, he executed a valid last will and testament, correct?""

""Yeah,"" Grant said. ""Mom told us Dad left the real estate and the corporate entity to her in a trust, and Travis and I were just designated operating managers until her death.""

Marcus let out a low, dry chuckle. ""Grant, your mother filed an unsigned draft of a testamentary trust during the initial probate filing. But she never filed the actual signed, witnessed codicil your father executed three weeks before he passed at St. Joseph's Hospital.""

Grant froze. ""What codicil?""

""Your dad had a private attorney named Arthur Pendelton,"" Marcus explained. ""Arthur retired three years ago, but his archives are preserved. Pendelton's office sent a formal registered copy of the final codicil to your mother as the personal representative of the estate. It was never submitted to the probate court. Under Georgia law, withholding a valid will or codicil is a serious misdemeanor, bordering on fraud.""

""What did the signed codicil say, Marcus?"" I asked, my heart pounding against my ribs.

""Your father knew exactly who his sons were,"" Marcus said clearly. ""The codicil stipulated that upon his death, fifty-one percent of Whitaker Auto and Tire—including the physical real estate, the equipment, and the operating license—transferred immediately and directly to Grant Whitaker. Darlene was granted a twenty-nine percent non-voting revenue interest, and Travis was left twenty percent, contingent upon his continued employment as a non-executive employee.""

Grant dropped his pen. His mouth fell open. ""Fifty-one percent? I... I own the shop?""

""You've owned the majority of that company for six straight years, Grant,"" Marcus said. ""Your mother buried the paperwork, lied to the court, and has been illegally paying Travis an executive salary out of your profits while treating you like an hourly grease monkey.""
